PRESIDENTS DAY A SUCCESS: Sunday saw a total of 48 players take part in the Grenfell Presidents Day for 2013. Teams came from Cowra, Lachlan Valley DBA, Boorowa, Young, Woodstock, Gooloogong, Caragabal and Canowindra. Twenty-four players from Grenfell also had a game which was good to see. The winners for the day were Barry Bradtke, Nev Coleman and Quentin Murray. Runners up were John Fanning, Jim Sparkes and Phil Hunter. Congratulations to these men. For 2013 we awarded 1 Tie Bar and 1 Merit Badge. The recipient of the Tie Bar was Barry Bradtke and the Merit Badge went to Brad Galvin. Both these men earned the awards for their dedication, help and loyalty to the Grenfell Men’s Bowling Club. Thanks must go to all the committee for assisting in the running of the day, the Club Ltd for putting on the free Beer and to Leann and her girls in the kitchen for the delicious meal.
FATHER’S DAY BOWLS: This Sunday is Father’s Day, and where should all good fathers be on this day? At the Club! There is a bowls day on, with prize money of $150 put on by Paul Sills. Single name entries have to be in by 10am on Sunday. Game starts at 1.30pm in mufti. There is a name list on the board.
CLUB TRIPLES: One game of the Triples was played over the weekend. The Hunter trio of James, Ross and Graeme played Steve Galvin, Andrew (Spock) Armstrong and Andrew Brown. Brown and crew got out to and early lead thanks to solid bowls from the lead and second. Constant bowls in the head from Steve and Spock had the Hunter boys on the back foot and Steve, Spock and Andrew went on to win the game 31-14.
The games that haven’t been played need to be played by this Sunday the 1st. If you cannot play on Sunday or before, you will have to forfeit.
CLASSIC TRIPLES TOURNAMENT: The Aston & Joyce Classic Triples Tournament is on September 14 and 15. This is Grenfell’s premier tournament and all local players should be quick in putting their name down to secure a spot. Find two mates and put your name down on the list. The prize money is the best part of $3000.00.
BITS AND PIECES: The bowls jackpot didn’t go off this week. The result was -8 on end 13 and sits at a handy $179.
JOKE OF THE WEEK: Four bowlers were out on the ‘Green’ in a pairs final As one of them was about to bowl at the 15th end, which was next to a busy road, they saw a funeral precession go by. Instead of bowling, the bowler removed his cap and placed it on his chest until the funeral had passed.
At this point, the other three said, “You know, that was the most touching thing I’ve ever seen.”
And the bowler answers, “Well, I was married to her for 15 years. It was the least I could do!”
< INDOOR BOWLS
We only had a small number of bowlers last Friday night and the night was a point score only night. The winners on the night were M. Drogemuller, N. Feeney, T. Hazell and G. O’Brien scoring 20 points against B. Clifford. (M. Piefke and N. O’Brien combined thirds), Vera played second and O. Feeney as lead, scoring nine points.
We are looking for big numbers for the Western Rivers Mixed Pairs on Sunday, September 8, as each affiliated club is allowed to bring six teams if they have them, but these days are much easier for our locals now the club has the new blinds over the windows which saves our members a lot of work after games are completed.
The Young Open day is on September 15 and is now full with two teams of mixed fours already nominated.
Next Friday night is again social bowls due to having five Friday’s in August.
