Guests were able to hear two informative talks from Graham Lamb (SES) and Vicki Williams (RFS) on how to better prepare their homes and themselves for natural disasters such as flood and fire.
Many of the attendees travelled to the event from neighbouring towns and that some of these capitalised on the extended hours of the Weddin Community Native Nursery to make some native plant purchases before heading home.
Graham Ross AM then took the stage and entertained everyone with personal, historical and gardening stories and tips. Fans were able to have their gardening questions answered personally by Graham, over an extended lunch.
To top off the day Sally Sutherland from Source Architects spoke about some of the clever ways they use building and landscape design to combat the extremes of heat, cold, fire and flood.
The SES and RFS provided attendees with tips and tricks to reduce the impact of floods and fires on properties, homes, pets and livestock as well as guidelines and checklists on what to do in the event of an emergency with clear messages around having a leave early plan in place which outlines
- when you will leave
- where you will go
- what you will take
- who you will tell.
To find out more on how to prepare for natural disasters you can head to the SES website at www.ses.nsw.gov.au/ or the RFS website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/about-us/our-districts/mid-lachlan-valley.
Weddin Landcare said they would like to say a big thank you to the following people for making the day possible:
- Grenfell Country Club - a great venue with all the facilities we required;
- Unwind in Grenfell for the incredible spread for morning tea and lunch;
- Elyse from Paper Daisy Studio for the flowers to brighten the space;
- All our guest speakers for sharing their knowledge;
- Marg Applebee from Central West Regional Landcare for bringing Graham Ross to our town;
- Katie Caldwell from Landcare NSW for coming along to their event (and her handy work on the vacuum); and
- Everyone who came along and supported their event!
This workshop was possible with the support of Landcare NSW's People Led Prevention project, empowering communities across regional NSW in developing disaster resilience and preparedness skills. The Disaster Risk Reduction Fund is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments.
