Three Cuts Distiller's Release Gin has been awarded Best International Gin at the American Distillery Institute Awards, with American-born founder Justin Turner honoured to have his distillery recognised in his home country.

The American Distillery Institute Awards are the oldest and largest craft spirits awards in the world and Three Cuts Gin Distiller's Release is the first Tasmanian gin to take home the award for Best International Gin.

It was a big night for Three Cuts Gin across the board, with each of the four gins in the range taking home a medal.

Hailing from a Californian winemaking family, Turner Stillhouse founder Mr Turner believes he was always destined for a career in the world of libations.

"You can say it was a return to my roots," Mr Turner said.

After meeting and falling in love with his Tasmanian wife in New York City, the couple moved to the Tamar Valley to start a craft distillery.

Although the plan was initially to focus on whisky, Mr Turner said gin distilling quickly became a passion.

"I think with gin you need to be really creative and think outside the square," he said

"I don't think I appreciated that beforehand, the incredible amount of diversity you can create with different botanicals still amazes me.

"I think you really need to be a better-than-amateur home chef to understand and appreciate the differences and nuances with spices and flavours to apply that to the craft of gin."

For Mr Turner, the bold and unique flavours of Three Cuts Gin Distiller's Release is key to its success in the international market.

As with all Three Cuts Gin, the Distiller's Release was a collaboration between Mr Turner and head distiller Brett Coulson and utilised botanicals such as green cardamom, coriander and white peppercorn against a backbone of citrus and juniper.

"It took us quite a while to get the balance of the recipe perfected and Brett really championed the use of green cardamom," Mr Turner said.

It is hoped that the recognition from the US market will be advantageous for Three Cuts as it attempts to break in to the US market.

"I can wait to get back to the US and spruik our gin a bit more," he said.

"We're excited to help represent Tasmania."
