Allison wants local dog owners to ensure they follow the rules and laws laid out by the Companion Animals Act 1998 so they do not end up receiving a fine, with new infringement penalties increasing in cost to animal owners.
"If your dog commits an offence and has been or is in the process of being declared menacing or dangerous a penalty of up to $1,760.00 may be incurred," Allison said. "Please ensure that your dog is always kept contained and secure and is always kept on a leash whilst in a public place."
Allison also warns locals to make sure their puppies and dogs are microchipped.
"Your dog must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age or point of sale, and registered by six months of age," she said. "Breaches of the legislative requirements may enable Council to take any appropriate action to ensure compliance. This may include but is not limited to impounding your dog and/or issuing a Penalty Infringement Notice with no further warning," she said.
Legislation under the Companion Animals Act 1998: Fail to prevent dog escaping - $220.00 penalty infringement notice. Own/be in charge of dog uncontrolled in public place - $330.00 penalty infringement notice. Dog not wear collar and name tag - minimum $180.00 penalty infringement notice. Own/be in charge of dog in prohibited place - $330.00 penalty infringement notice. Own/be in charge of dog which rushes/attacks/bites/harasses/chases any person/animal (whether or not an injury occurs) - minimum $1,320.00 penalty infringement notice.
