WOMEN’S BOWLS
The second game of the Women’s Bowls pairs championship was played on Thursday September 20 between Judy McAlister and Sue Gault against Sonia Ingall and Kathy Betcher.
Again the wind had as much to do with the game as did the players.
The outcome was a win to Sonia and Kathy 25 to 10, although the score did not really reflect the game. Well done to all.
Saturday saw a very social game with Julie Wood, Rosemary and Ray Walter against Sandra Paine, Sonia Ingall and Warren Paine.
After getting out to a big lead, the game evened out to a small win to Warren and team.
A big win goes to the women’s club, with a warm welcome to Sandra who has joined us as a full bowling member.
There will be a game of singles on Friday when Judy McAlister will meet Rosemary Walter.
This will leave a game between Julie Wood and Kathy Betcher to be played in this round of the singles.
The final of the pairs will be played between Sonia Ingall and Kathy Betcher against Julie Wood and Rosemary Walter at a date to be fixed.
Next week will be our Presidents Day on October 4, so no championships will be played.
As we are trying to encourage new bowlers to the game, we ask any members of the public or past bowlers, if they have any size o or size 1 bowls in the newer style, that they would donate or lend to the club.
If so, please ring the club on 02 6343 1656.

Colin Hodges Race Review -
Grenfell Jockey Club Races
Saturday September 22, 2018.
A rails hugging ride by Ken Dunbar on Sovereignaire in the Cup completed a four win haul at the Grenfell meeting on Saturday for the Dubbo based jockey.
Trained at Bathurst by Dean Mirfin, the eight year old gelding Sovereignaire was positioned midfield on the fence by Dunbar, with Bon Honour setting the pace in the 2000 metres Oliver’s Hardware/Crutcher Developments Grenfell Cup.
Gentleman Max carrying the 61kg top weight took a slender lead at the top of the straight however Sovereignaire ($6) finished strongly along the inside rail to score a convincing win over the Trevor Sutherland, Wagga Wagga trained stablemates Run Hoff Run (Bryan Murphy, $3.20) and Gentleman Max (Michael Travers, $4 ).
Dean Mirfin was responsible for a fine training feat as Sovereignaire hadn’t won for over two years and was stepping up sharply in distance for the 2000 metres Cup.
Ken Dunbar kicked off his big day with a winning double on the Wayne Collison, Narromine trained pair Bring A Beer Along and Some Nights.
Bring A Beer Along ( $5 ) shared the lead then broke clear to win the Benchmark 58 Handicap ( 1000 metres ) from the fast finishing Malibu Stacy ( Kath Bell-Pitomac,$21 ) and Benno’s Boy ( Michael Travers, $2.80 favourite ).
Some Nights ( $5 ) then finished best to beat the leader Future In Doubt ( James Rogers, $26 ) and Shake Off ( Mathew Cahill, $10 ) in the Mawhoods IGA/Bromar Engineering Class 2 Handicap, 1200 metres.
Feature event , the $8000 Cultiv8 Financials Loaded Dog BM 58 Handicap ( 1400 metres ) saw the Karen McCarroll, Wellington trained Smart Attire ( Ken Dunbar,$4 ) leading for home and holding on to beat Cryfowl ( Michael Hackett, $4 ) and Tearful Kitty ( Michael Travers, $3.50 fav.).
Other winners were Tiffoni ( Richard Bensley, $1.60 fav.) from the Matthew Dale stable at Canberra and Rip Into Ghia ( Mathew Cahill, $1.80 fav.) now trained at Canberra by Luke Pepper.
Rip Into Ghia had formerly raced in New Zealand and finished second at Timaru in July.
Despite the drought the Grenfell racecourse was presented in great order by a small but very enthusiastic committee.
Racing at Dubbo ( Friday ), Come-By-Chance Picnics and Mudgee ( Saturday ) and Mungery Picnics ( Sunday ).
