Following the reading of the April minutes by secretary, Dot Fitzpatrick, the correspondence was dealt with and the treasurer’s report for the month of April was presented by treasurer, Brian McDonald. Pat Hewen won the draw for birthday of the month, after social secretary Rosalie White read Birthdays and Wedding anniversaries for the month. Correspondence included an invitation to the Rotary Changeover dinner on June 20.
Esma Baker, standing in for tourist officer Nola Nobes, handed out necessary forms for the 4-night trip to Broken Hill from September 23 to 27 travelling out by train from Parkes, with the last night being spent at Mildura. These concession forms, and a deposit of $100 per person, are due to be handed in at the June meeting, with the remainder due in August. The cost for this trip, which includes a visit to Silverton, the Mundi Mundi Lookout, the Miner’s Memorial, The Big Picture, the Flying Doctor Base and a cruise on PS Melbourne on the Murray River is $900, or $865 pensioner concession or $815 Pensioner Voucher.
A report on the Friendship Day on May 16 held at Bathurst Panthers Club, attended by 22 local members, was presented by Esma Baker. There were 23 Clubs represented by 270 people, with great entertainment such as the Scots School Pipes and Drums and the singing Vicar, Rev. Claire Wright, from the Uniting Church. The 2019 Friendship Day will be held at Orange.
Barbara Bean reported on the Mystery trip on April 18 in perfect weather, which included a visit to Jane Costello’s large homestead and garden, featuring statues and a maze, Richard Taubman’s Trading Post at Murringo, lunch at the Services Club in Young and then the Chinese Gardens. Once again, thanks to Nola and Loaders Coaches for a great day.
Members were informed that our Birthday luncheon will be held on September 17 at the Country Club and that a request had been received from the Lawson Festival committee for volunteers to assist with a door count at the Library during the Festival.
After morning tea, entertainment officer, Sally Norrie, introduced our guest speaker, Sergeant Mick Madgwick, who has been a Police Officer for 20 years, serving at Brewarrina, West Wyalong, Katoomba, Windsor and now for 7 years at Grenfell. His father retired after 40 years as a Police Officer. Mick commented that Grenfell has a low crime rate compared to other surrounding towns and answered many questions from members. His advice is to ring the Station to ask to speak to a Grenfell officer and informed us that Stations are not staffed for 24 hours but often from 7 am till 3 am the next morning. Highway Police vehicles now have great technology – can recognise 8 number plates per second.
Graham Fisher, on behalf of the club, thanked Mick and presented him with a small gift of appreciation.
Our next meeting will be held on Monday, June 18, at 10 am, with Mavis Droegmuller and Vera Penhey on the Door Roster and Beryl and Tom Lavers, Mavis Droegmuller, Vera Penhey and Ann Pipe on the Morning Tea Roster.
