U7s: It was a day of action and fun at with the Mighty U7s Panthers proving to be super competitive once again. The new-comers for the year proved themselves handy players who can get into space and turn on speed. Camilla Metcalfe was sensational in both games having a hand in most of the tries and even bagging one for herself. Little brother Jed was not going to be left out showing some blistering speed teaming up with Charlie Knight and Isaac Smith to cause trouble out wide for the opposition.
Hayden Aspin also had a great spell with rock solid defence and a huge amount of pace. Old hands Tayla Smith, Patrick Radnedge and Alex Wright had great games with Tayla and Alex both bagging a couple of tries and Patrick playing a key role in making sure everyone got their hands on the ball. Jack Protherau was under the weather for the first game but kept fighting and showed some real heart. Big thanks to the parents who keep our players hydrated, fed and on the field, and huge thanks to super coaches Matt and Jamie.
U12s: This side hit the game running fresh from our first full training session with our Wyalong players on Wednesday. The improved understanding showed immediately against Coota with Grenfell being able to hold the ball for long periods. Strong games again from Archie Metcalfe, Alex Nowlan and Angus McCaskie, but unfortunately they couldn’t get us over the line.
Our second game was against Young Shellfish. The warm up was conducted by Brumbies development officer Zac Elliot. He whipped them into a frenzy with a solid half of ferocious tackling by Grenfell. Halfback Will Wilson seemed a man possessed. Zac confessed that he had offered a Brumbies hat as a prize for the best tackle of the game. Great efforts from Hugh Allen, Will Wilson and Ruben Ryan couldn’t quite get us the win, congratulations to Young.
U12s VIVA: The Cootamundra Gala day proved to be a long day at the office for the U12 Viva team. They were up against some very strong opposition in Cootamundra and Young, who had the benefit of older, more experienced players. Annabella Taylor put in a great effort scoring both of the teams tries against the run of play, as well as chasing down opposition players. Mikayla Hughes performed valiantly in both attack and defence, as did Skye McLelland and Georgia Squires with many try scoring opportunities being foiled at the last second by the more experienced opposition. Emerson Squires, Ella Mitton, Scarlett Nowlan and Genevieve McLelland were exceptional at gaining ground from the breakdown, with rapid ball movement a feature. It was pleasing to see the girls adapt to the opposition and their play improved greatly during the day.
U14s: A Cracking day for rugby in Cootamundra with an ever improving side taking on Tumut. Kye O’Byrne, Hamish Birch, Oscar Schaefer and Hugh Wilson in the forwards gave a mighty effort in defence and attack which helped the Grenfell side going forward. However Tumut were too strong, downing the boys.
After some solid words from coach Stu Hughes the boys came out against Coota with improved vigor. Rhys Hughes, Ollie Taylor and Gus Troth, gave it their all, a terrific combination is forming with Max Brenner, Riley Aspin and Tyler Byron, unfortunately Cootamundra kept well on top of the boys.
With some hard work and guidance the boys are going to go from strength to strength, there were some improvements in line outs and scrumming, well done boys.
Till next week –
