Senior
Representative Teams
Congratulations to Steve Galvin on his selection to captain a Zone 4 Senior Representative team in the State Senior Interzone Championships, to be played at Figtree, south of Wollongong.
Steve’s selection followed trial matches held at Majellan Bowling Club at Bathurst at the weekend.
Grenfell bowlers John Joyce and Tim Fowler also took part in the selection trials and, although they played bowls of a high standard, just missed out. Bad luck, boys.
Pennants
A squad of 13 has been selected for the Grade 7 Zone playoff, to be held at Lithgow Workers Club on May 4/5.
The bowlers selected in the squad are:
Kerry Aston, Roger Baker, Scott Baker, Martin Betcher, Barry Bradtke, Keith Brus, Robbie Chambers, David Hancock, Dennis Hughes, Phillip Hunter, Ross Hunter, Barry Jones and Warren Paine.
Players who haven’t already done so are reminded to let Ross Hunter or Martin Betcher know of their accommodation requirements.
Club Championships
Bowlers have responded well to the Bowls Committee’s plea for them to speed up the flow of both the Major and Minor Singles Championships, with a flurry of matches decided this week.
In Major Singles –
Ray Walter defeated James Hunter 31-12, and Sam Brown def Kerry Aston 31-16.
In Minor Singles –
Martin Betcher def David Frost 31-18, Barry Bradtke def John Dumbrell 31-22, Graham Sadler def David Ballard 31-8 and Mark McSpadden def Josh Liebeck 31-12.
Meanwhile, sheets are on the board for nominations in the club’s Major and Minor Pairs Championships.
Nominations will close fairly soon so make sure you get your entries in.
2018 Zone
Championships
A reminder once again that entries for the 2018 Zone 4 Open, Senior and Presidents Pairs Championships close on Friday, May 4.
Entry forms are available at the club (see Steve Galvin) and the entry fee is $5 per player.
Grenfell has been selected as a venue for sectional play in the Open Pairs on the weekend of May 19/20.
The finals will be held at Cowra the following Saturday, May 26.
Social Bowls
There’s nothing like a stretch of nice autumn weather to bring out the social bowlers, and this week more than 60 bowlers enjoyed a friendly game on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Prize winners were:
Chooks –
Tim Fowler, Noel Brown (2), Gary Pipe and Mark McSpadden; Market Night Vouchers – John Dumbrell, Greg Fanning, John Grogan, Nevin Hughes and Rob Chambers.
Free games –
Nev Coleman, Lindsay Ballard, Jim Sparkes, Andrew Armstrong and Roger Baker.
Jackpot
Once again the bowls jackpot failed to find any winners.
The required combination this week was an unlikely -8 on end 8 on an even-numbered rink.
As a consequence the jackpot continues to climb and next week will be worth $368.
