90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: A most enjoyable afternoon tea to celebrate the 90th birthday of Roma Sinclair was held at the home of Chris and Trevor Lobb. There was a large gathering of some of Roma’s dear friends to reminisce and recall some of the wonderful times they had together and to talk about all she has done for Grenfell and the community, together with her kindness and generosity and the love everyone has for her.
Tributes to Roma were delivered by Elaine Pereira (Uniting Church Ladies Auxiliary), Deborah Foster (ITC), Nevin Hughes (Dramatic Society/Rotary), Pam Livingstone (Weddin Wanderers) and Jenny Gavin (Staff of Grenfell Pharmacy). Roma’s birthday cake was made by Chris and the Happy Birthday song was led by Peter Moffitt. Happy 90th Roma!
DIAMOND WEDDING ANNIVERSARY: Elwyn and Shirley Turner were married in St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Grenfell on March 22 1958. Their attendants were George Clarke as best man and Joan Norris as bridesmaid.
Due to Rev Ewin’s unavoidable commitment elsewhere the ceremony was conducted by the Methodist Minister, Rev Nicholson. The reception was held in the CWA rooms with Mrs Vera Dickinson in charge of catering.
Following the reception the happy couple were transported to Cowra in Les Hampton’s Taxi to board the train for Sydney and they eventually arrived at their honeymoon destination in Manly. They returned to Grenfell to Elwyn’s home, previously owned by the Show Committee which he purchased when he was the Caretaker.
Throughout these years they said they have been fortunate to enjoy good health (until now) which has allowed them to do a lot of travelling as well as being part of the Old Time Dancing Group, which brought about many lasting friendships.
They also managed to pursue their hobbies which led to competing and being successful in the local and surrounding shows. The arrival and the achievements of their children and grandchildren have given them so much pleasure and joy.
When they moved to their house on the hill, they would never envisaged that they would still be there sixty years later. They have both lived in Grenfell for over eighty years and not surprisingly are the only original residents in Alexandra Street!
A special luncheon was held at the Railway Hotel on Friday March 23 with Peggy Abbott, Jill Norris, Joan Eppelstun, Joan Bolton, Gwen Lowe, Kerrie Ham and Jan and Ron McLelland.
Shirley and Elwyn were the recipients of Certificates of Congratulations from the Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull MP, Steph Cooke, Member for Cootamundra MP and Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Member for Riverina, the Hon Michael McCormack MP. Many will remember Shirley their favourite Pre-School teacher many years ago..
HARMONY DAY: The Grenfell Pre-school and Long Day Care Centre welcomed visitors to the centre to celebrate Harmony Day on Wednesday March 21. Sharon said, “Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity which makes Australia great place to live, laugh and learn from one another, embracing all our unique qualities, attributes and heritage, where everyone belongs.”
She explained the funding, the fees and anything to do with the running of the pre-school. Following the talk guests were taken on a tour of the wonderful centre which caters for everyone from new born to after school care.
