The first round saw the combination of Grant Fisher and Leigh Taylor playing consistent tennis to win the round in a nail biting finish. They just edged out Matthew Clarke and Arnold Brown 28 games to 27 after some fierce and competitive tennis. Grant and Leigh won four of their sets 6/2, 5/3, 7/1, 6/2 and levelled the other set 4 all- a great result for the two men. Matthew Clarke who was a fill in for Danny Joyce combined with Arnold Brown to also play consistent tennis and they won four sets 6/2, 5/3, 5/3, 7/1 and levelled the set 4 all against the top pair, Grant and Leigh.
Next best players were Grahame Edwards and Rod Freudenstein, winning a total of 20 games for the round. Their sets were 4/4, 3/5, 7/1, 1/7, 5/3. Hugh Moffitt and Mark Liebich battled away in their sets to win 18 games. Sets were 2/6, 7/1, 3/5, 3/5, 3/5, while just a game behind were Stuart McKellar and Pat Hazell winning 17 games. Their sets were 4/4, 3/5, 5/3, 4/4, 1/7. The other pair taking part in Round 1, Andrew Bucknell and John Walmsley had little luck in their tennis. Andrew was a fill-in for the injured Charles Harvey.
The men are now looking forward to playing Round 2 next Tuesday night, June 13, weather permitting. Several tennis players are still turning up for a social game on Thursday afternoon commencing at around 1.30 pm. Anyone looking for a friendly hit will be made most welcomed.
