The Parkes Netball Association hosted one of four Central West rounds at the Parkes netball courts on May 24 and 25, which saw 32 teams and more than 320 primary and high school students participate. Teams, consisting of players in years 5-10, played up to seven 23-minute matches, while Year 3-4 students enjoyed a gala day.
Day one on Wednesday saw the primary schools take to the courts, including Parkes Public, Parkes East Public and Middleton Public.
And it was Middleton Public and Parkes Public who qualified for the next round in the Year 5-6 mixed division.
The top two teams in the high school games on Thursday made it through to the regional finals.
Both The Henry Lawson High School’s Year 7-8 boys teams took out their division.
Condobolin High School won the Year 7-8 girls division with Parkes High School coming second.
In the new Year 9-10 division – added to the competition this year – Parkes High School won the girls event, with Henry Lawson High School second.
And Narromine High School claimed the Year 9-10 boys division and Henry Lawson High School again taking second.
The teams will head to Orange on August 8-9 to compete against other winners from the remaining Central West rounds at Cobar, Dubbo and Bathurst. The winners at Orange will go on to the 2017 Schools Cup state final on September 19-20 at Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park.
“From the reports I’ve heard, it was a really good day [at Parkes],” Netball NSW Regional Development and Pathways Unit Manager Mardi Aplin said.
Parkes Netball Association vice president Wally Norman was pleased with how the two-day event turned out. He said the event went very smoothly and Netball NSW Central West Regional Development Officer Sophie Kleeman, who was present on the day, ran a tight ship.
“Sophie said she’s been to quite a few netball grounds and she said our little complex was way out in front,” Norman said.
“All the hard work everyone has done means it’s all been worthwhile.
Norman wanted to thank Parkes Shire Council and the Parkes Sports Council for their hard work ahead of the event.
