Students and accompanying teachers travelled to Young for the regional challenge and after a brief introduction by coordinators from the University of Newcastle students commenced their assigned activities which consisted of:
ElectraCITY; Confounding Communications; Grasping at Straws; Helter Skelter Shelter; Stringways; Catapult; Mission to Mars and the Bridge.
The half day challenges got underway and included - ElectraCITY, Stringways, Grasping at Straws, Helter Skelter Shelter and Confounding Communications.
The Henry Lawson High School students displayed good teamwork, clear communication and thoughtful ideas receiving first place for their two Helter Skelter Shelter teams and the morning Confounding Communications team.
During the ElectraCITY, Stringways and Grasping at Straws challenges THLHS students excelled coming second in all three activities. A fantastic effort.
The teams with the full day challenges worked hard to create effective plans for their activities constructing an innovative catapult which managed to hurl the ball the furthest.
The Henry Lawson High School team’s ball travelled a whopping 20 metres.
The Mission to Mars group worked on and perfected their Mars Rover, conquering the course in an incredible 9.8 seconds, which earned them a first place in this activity.
Then came bridge testing group who worked tirelessly through the day to create a bridge that was both strong and light which proved to be a challenge.
The bridge was definitely not the lightest but it turned out to be the strongest, holding five ingots of weight, which was enough to secure The Henry Lawson High School team overall first place. Well done to all involved.
The Science and Engineering students now look forward to competing in the next level of the challenge at Newcastle NSW, best of luck to all competitors.
