President Bev Kelly welcomed 67 members and 3 visitors to the August meeting of the Grenfell Probus Club, the visitors being Mardi Bucknell and the judges of the Speech Contest, Jill Hodgson and Mary Moffitt.

In business arising following the reading of the Minutes by Secretary, George Walker, it was announced that plans are well in hand for our 26th Birthday Luncheon on 20th October to begin at 12 for 12.30 pm and the cost of $25 is to be paid at the September meeting.
Treasurer, Les Schaeffer, gave his report, followed by Social Secretary Rosalie White, and Sue Simpson won the draw for birthday of the month, for which recipients have to be present. Tourist Officer Esma Baker announced details of the day trip to Narrandera Open Gardens on Sunday, 26th October, with a cost of $65 to be paid at the September meeting and the cost includes 8 gardens, Devonshire Morning Tea and a light lunch.
There are already 40 bookings and room for a few more. The planned 3 day trip in March, 2015 will be accommodated at Hawkesbury Juniors Resort and members were advised of a Day Trip to “Dirty Dancing” on Saturday, 21st February next year, organised by Loaders’ Coaches.
Jim Neill read his comprehensive report on the Lions Club Changeover Dinner attended by 8 Probians and included the astounding fact that 26 members had raised over $40,000 during the year – an amazing effort.
General Business included a request for Door Roster Volunteers.
After morning tea, Elaine Hocking introduced our Annual Probus Speaking Contest for The Henry Lawson High School students, with a record number of 13 participants -7 in the Junior Section (Year 7) and 6 in the Senior Section (Years 8 and 9) – who all displayed knowledge and excellent preparation with a wide variety of topics.
Junior participants were Connor Day – “Is Technology moving too fast?”, Stirling Taylor – “Respect”, William Bucknell – “Video Games”, Fletcher Taylor – “Grenfell needs more volunteers”, Bridget Baker – “Words of Wisdom”, Marie Knight – “Power of Words” and Tanaya Holz – “Animal Cruelty”. Senior participants were Jessica Cooper – “Depression”, Paige Hughes – “Child Labour”, Jessica Pereira – “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, Veronica Garrity – “Cyber Technology”, Sarah Knight – “Appreciating people while you have them” and Grace Kelly – “Euthanasia”.
The judges then announced the winners – Connor Day, First, and Bridget Baker, Second in the Junior Section with Jessica Pereira First and Grace Kelly Second in the Senior Section, saying it had been a very close contest.
Elaine Hocking thanked all those involved and presented gifts of appreciation to the 2 judges and to English teacher, Mathew Lynch, for his organisation and thanked School Principal, Margaret Carey, for her encouragement.
