On Saturday October 14, 2017 the school will be open with a range of activities on offer including a memorabilia display, performances from current students, classroom displays, souvenirs to commemorate the occasion, a fantastic magazine publication that depicts both past and present moments of the school created and compiled by teacher Francesca Nolan, a BBQ lunch followed by old-fashioned games out on the oval as part of the school’s 150th sesquicentenary celebrations.
A time capsule is to be buried after lunch with items from the current school body; this is to be opened in 50 years time. Come and see the marvellous mural that has been painted by current teacher Francesca Nolan and her mum Kerry Suttonberg to commemorate this special milestone. The mural depicts the school and the town of Grenfell with beautiful yellow canola, the 150 year special school emblem, the fish (for the fish philosophy) the students, sheep and more.
There will be an unveiling of a new sign to the school’s revamped secret garden in memory of Mrs ‘Science’ Moffitt (Peta) and her dedication to teaching Science across the school.
To culminate the celebrations, a dinner will be held at the Country Club to sit down, relax and catch up with friends. Staff have arranged for some past students and staff to speak at the dinner sharing their fond memories. Tickets for the dinner are $35 and are available at the school office also please note that tickets will be available at Louisa's locker during the holidays.
The school is also creating a beautiful BBQ area near the hall and are selling personalised family and/or business ‘pavers’ to help make this area more attractive and as a visible record of the family traditions within the school. So if you would like to purchase one these to place your family name(s) as a record of your time at GPS, contact school or visit the Facebook page that will provide a link for you to place an order
Staff and students would like to acknowledge the generous donations and services of the following businesses and individuals:
Under the guidance of project manager Rod Walsh, who has volunteered his time to create this area which will include two BBQ’s and outdoor tables and most importantly the 150 sesquicentenary pavers, the following people have been instrumental in constructing the project that is almost completed including:
Doug Konen who supplied the machinery (as well as a machinery operator Daniel McFarlane) Doug transported the crushed granite for the base while his off-sider Daniel done the boring for the peer holes.
Jeremy D’Ombrain and Tim Hazell who built the formwork for the concrete and laid the rio and once the cement was poured they spread and levelled it for the floor.
The concrete was supplied by Mitton Bros at a discounted rate. John Gorman volunteered his time and labour to assist with the project.
Oliver’s Hardware donated all of the metal for the frame while Glenn Gault provided his time and expertise to cut the metal and erect the frame.
Tradesmart in Young donated the timber trusses for the roofing as well as fascia and eaves.
Reece Plumbing also from Young donated the roofing material as well as the gutters and down pipes.
The painting will be completed by Anthony Joyce who has volunteered his time to finalise the job.
Also thanks to Luke Armstrong of Luke Armstrong Painting who volunteered his time to help grid and prime the surface for the mural. He has also loaned his scaffolding until the project is complete.
The school’s sesquicentenary celebrations are scheduled to take place the first week back, beginning on Friday October 13 with the school fete commencing at 3:30pm. Come along and join in the celebrations.
