In Mathematics this term students have been working with whole numbers, fractions and decimals in a variety of ways. Students have revised their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and place value. Students are developing an understanding of inverse operations and how you can use this to check answers. The connection between multiplication and division is important in helping students move from additive thinking towards multiplicative thinking. Multiplicative thinking is indicated by a capacity to work flexibly with the concepts, strategies and representations of multiplication (and division) as they occur in a wide range of contexts.

In Geography students are exploring the different climates, settlement patterns and demographic characteristics of places. We began by comparing two very different places in NSW. The use of Google Earth helped students to zoom in and take notice of the differences between these two places. Students are now working on gathering information about Grenfell and another place in Australia.
In Science this term, students are exploring sustainability, with a specific focus on growing food. One student has written a rap song in English about sustainability. Students have designed and constructed a mini greenhouse from recycled materials to grow and germinate seeds or seedlings. Students investigate the concepts of sustainable design, what plants need to grow, photosynthesis and how the analogy of the microclimate within a greenhouse relates to the global greenhouse effect.
