The incorrect sign has now been replaced.

I wish to thank you for your article bringing to light the incorrect sign depicting the allocation of the Jewish internment at our local cemetery. It was a team effort and with your journalistic investigation, plus the intervention of the Chevra Kadisha we confirmed to Mr Twohill that the JEWS sign was infact incorrect. We were then advised the sign would be changed to correctly read JEWISH with the Star of David to follow the inscription. We had requested Council inform us when the new sign would be erected as we had been in touch with the Jewish Synagogue to send a Rabbi to perform a sacred Blessing and Consecration ceremony. We left this message for Mr Twohill on August 2 only to learn several days later Council had already erected the new sign, minus the Star of David, which was respectfully asked to be included when the issue first came to light. We wish to inform that Jewish internment throughout the world all hold this inscription. When approached as to why we had not been informed the new sign was being erected Mr Twohill’s response was that the sign had been attended to immediately and the matter dealt with. We will, however, still hold a ceremony and are waiting on a reply from the Synagogue to confirm a date, we shall let the community know so those wishing to attend can come along and share in the blessed event. Now we are in anticipation hoping to receive a letter of apology from Council to the McAway family for the distress endured in seeing this sign each time they paid their respect. Biruta Swain
