Channel Nine's 60 Minutes has confirmed it did not offer Melbourne Storm skipper Cameron Smith a right of reply before airing Sunday night's explosive interview with former Newcastle Knight Alex McKinnon.

In the Liz Hayes interview, McKinnon watched for the first time footage of the 2014 incident in which he was left paralysed following a lifting tackle from the Storm's Jordan McLean.

McKinnon slammed Smith's behaviour following the fateful tackle, at one point calling it "f---ing ridiculous".

"You see someone with two, four, six, eight, nine people around them and you want to debate about a f---ng penalty?" the Aberdeen native said angrily, watching Smith continue to ask the referee whether or not the tackle is worthy of a penalty, while he lies helpless on the ground for several minutes, before eventually being stretchered off the field.

"Is he still debating? Is he f---ing serious? Wouldn't you just shut up? It's f---ing ridiculous."

In the report, McKinnon said that since the incident, the young prop McLean has reached out to him.

"He sent me a message maybe two months after the accident. I'm not angry. At the start I probably was. I know he'd be sorry."

He revealed that Smith, the Storm and Australia captain, has not been in contact, when asked by Hayes if he was visited by the hooker in hospital.

"Nup. I don't know whether he's tried, but I'm sure if Jordan McLean could make contact he could."

A Nine spokesperson said Smith wasn't given the chance to give his side of the story because the report "was about Alex McKinnon".

However, Fairfax Media has since learned that Smith has been deeply upset that he was not allowed to defend himself on the program.

The Maroons captain is reportedly so angry that he will refuse all interview requests from Nine before, during or after Wednesday night's State of Origin decider.

A Nine spokesperson said: "60 Minutes has offered Cameron Smith a chance to respond this Sunday."

Fairfax Media understands Smith will turn 60 Minutes down but may accept an approach from another network - most likely Seven.
