Three very worthy students from The Henry Lawson High School, Kate Kelly, Georgia Robinson and Daniel Brown participated.
The three entrants displayed their talents and knowledge before a distinguished panel of judges Lynne Peterson, Elzi Russell and the Chris McGregor Manager of the National Australia Bank Young and Grenfell prior to the speeches section of the quest.
Prior to dinner two two-minute impromptu questions were asked:
1. Is social media enhancing or deterring human communications? If so how?
2. Now that the Federal election date is set, from your experience in leadership roles, what qualities and skills do you think make a good leader?
The contestants answered these questions with enthusiasm and some very interesting and different aspects to the questions were presented.
The students delivered their 5 minute prepared speeches following dinner.
Kate Kelly’s topic was “Women in Sport”; Daniel Brown delivered his speech on “The Power of Speech’ whilst Georgia Robinson speech was “Laughter is the Best Medicine”.
Spokesperson for the judging panel, Chris McGregor said that he was astounded by the calibre of all three students and said that it was a very difficult decision. He emphasised to the audience that the public speaking segment which the general public witnessed only accounts for 20 percent of the marks with the other 80 percent of marks being allocated from their performance at the private interview and information supplied on their entry forms.
Daniel Brown was announced overall winner of the Lions Youth of the Year Quest Local Finals with Kate Kelly receiving the Public Speaking segment of the Quest.
Daniel will participate in the Zone finals in 2014 at a venue to be announced with the winner going on the District then the State Final and from there if successful to the Multiple District Convention on April/May2014 in Tamworth where one young finalist will be announced Lions Australia Youth of the Year.
Sponsored by the National Australia Bank, the Quest is a community project that aims to assist secondary students in developing leadership and other citizenship qualities.
Whilst the judges were finalising the results, Lion Terry Carroll representing Lion Tony Fenech (Chairman of the Youth of the Year Committee) who was unavailable owing to the death of his father earlier in the week, called on Margaret Carey, Principal of The Henry Lawson High School to address the audience.
Margaret thanked the Lions Club for hosting the Quest and said that it is a great platform for which thoughts, passions and opinions can be expressed and for the students to gain confidence. She said that the students also participate in the Probus Club public speaking and that she was very proud of them all.
Matthew Lynch, the teacher who encourages the students to participate in the Quest congratulated them on their achievements.
Each student was presented with a participation certificate and a Lions Youth of the Year pin and pen.
Each student suitably responded.
Following the presentations to the students, President Barry thanked the Principal Margaret Carey and teacher Matthew Lynch for their continued support and presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the School.
President Barry presented the judges with certificates of appreciation and a Lions Youth of the Year pen.
