MEALS ON WHEELS MEMORIES: (Article written by Nell Lee)
In 1962 the Grenfell and District Senior Citizens Welfare Committee was formed.
It was decided to organise a hot meal for the elderly. The venue being the kitchen area in the old Oddfellow's Hall. A number of volunteers met and purchased meat and vegetables etc. These were cooked and served to a number of people who turned up to enjoy them. Some meals were delivered to a few men who were living in appalling conditions beyond the showground.
Eventually a deputation went to the Hospital Board to ask if meals could be purchased through the Hospital kitchen. The Board agreed to supply six meals per day on a trial basis for three months
These meals were placed in a foil lined pudding steamer and bedded in a box lined with straw. Eventually the Hospital Board agreed to increase our number to twenty per day (cost 40 cents for a three course meal, plus a piece of fruit). The committee had by this time purchased two hot boxes, heated by pellets. Aluminium lined containers were used in these boxes for the main meals. A smaller basin for sweets and in winter, plastic jars for soup. These were to be washed up by the person who had delivered the meal, then relined with foiled and returned to the hospital.
Over many years the volunteers came from each of the churches, plus the Golf Club, CWA Red Cross and Rotary Club (nine in all) and each group delivered for five days.
To ensure us to give hot meals to more people, many clients agreed to having the meal three days and someone else taking the remaining two days.
After almost thirty years this service was taken over by the Cowra-Grenfell Food Services Inc.
