Weddin Whispers: A special day for Francine Southgate

60TH BIRTHDAY: Saturday April 24 was a special day for former Weddin Shire resident Francine Southgate nee Huckel. Francine grew up in Caragabal and attended Caragabal and The Henry Lawson High Schools. Family and friends from Dubbo, Griffith, Melbourne, Sydney, Brewarrina, Millthorpe and Grenfell gathered at lunchtime at the Criterion Hotel for great food and fellowship. (thank you to the staff) The beautiful cake was made and decorated by her daughter Ashleigh, whilst her other daughter Sarah acted as MC.

Thank you to venue co-ordinator Kate Lee and Wanda Taylor for the yummy cup-cakes.

Fran said, "My thanks to all - it was lovely catching up."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Tony Bloomfield, who has been working in Grenfell at the new treatment works site celebrated his 60th birthday at the Chinese Restaurant on April 21. Helping Tony celebrate this milestone were his brother Kelvin and his wife Jill from Binnaway and his grandson Jesse who is also working in Grenfell. Carly and Peter Brown also were there to wish him well.

HAPPY "BIRDDAY": Our own Jenn Graham- celebrated her not '0' birthday on Wednesday April 21 at Unwind. Our 'Bird Lady" Jenn thought she would invite some of her close friends 'Chaps and Chappettes' to celebrate. (Although some did not read the invitation correctly) a great night of food, fun and catching up was enjoyed by all.

WELCOME BACK: Former Grenfell Resident and local Pharmacist David Donald, enjoyed a break in Grenfell recently.

David came to Grenfell in 1968 following the death of Mr Edwards who owned the Pharmacy situated in the top end of Main Street near where the bakery former/doctor's surgery was situated. He in turn, amalgamated with the Grenfell Pharmacy in 1974. David was hosted by Mardi Bucknell during his stay. He visited former business colleague, Roma Sinclair whilst in Grenfell.

NOSTALGIC VISITS: Two years to the day since his last visit Todd Cathcart returned to Grenfell last week. Todd was accompanied by his partner Brydie Jameson. Todd's father, Andrew who was with him on his last visit, unfortunately has since passed away

Todd's grandparents, Noel and Patricia Cathcart were Captains at the Salvation Army from 1963-67. Andrew's late wife Patricia is a sister to Terry Curl of Grenfell. Todd insisted that Terry and I have a photo with him, as we did two years ago.

GRENFELL CEF: Wow what a day! Thank you to all who donated and/or purchased goods on the recent street stall. Congratulations to Garry Hewen, winner of $100 voucher at the Grenfell Meat Barn and Tracie Ivins, winner of trailer load of wood. Well done to our small but dedicated CEF members and support crew.

MOTHER'S DAY: Best wishes to all Mothers on your special day.

Many Australians celebrate Mother's Day by showing appreciation for the achievements and efforts of mothers and mother figures. It is annually observed in Australia on the second Sunday in May.

Many Australians follow the Mother's Day traditions that stem from observances in countries like the USA and the UK.

However, it is an Australian who is credited with having started the tradition of giving gifts on Mother's Day. Janet Heyden, a resident of Sydney started a campaign in 1924 to collect gifts for lonely/aged mothers.
