Grenfell Amateur Swimming Club members Mikayla Hughes and Tom Robinson recently competed the 2021 NSW Country Championships held at Olympic Park.
Held over three days, qualifying swimmers from across country NSW took to the pool for a high performance competition where the best of the best faced off.
Mikayla and Tom had a weekend of highlights, undoubtedly the most exciting was Tom winning the gold medal in the men's 17 years and over 50m freestyle event in 23.59 seconds.
Current rankings show that to date, this is the fastest time in NSW by an 18 year old this swimming season and third fastest time recorded by an 18 year old in Australia this season.
To add to the excitement, Tom took the silver medal in the men's 17 years and over 50m butterfly event and rounded it out with a bronze in the men's 17 years and over 100m freestyle event.
With six swim over the three days, Tom posted five PB's. A terrific effort.
Swimming in only her second NSW Country Championships, Mikayla certainly didn't let the nerves get to her.
Competing in four events, Mikayla swam beautifully, posting PB's in all four events, including a huge 3.59 second PB in the girls 13 years 100m breaststroke.
However the highlight for Mikayla's support crew in the crowd was her 50m freestyle.
Swimming out in Lane 8, Mikayla owned her heat, finishing with a time of 29.83 seconds - the first time under 30 seconds is a huge milestone!
The Grenfell Amateur Swimming Club is extremely proud of Mikayla and Tom, they represented our club with pride and are wonderful positive role models for our younger swimmers.
Congratulations Mikayla and Tom on all of your achievements over the weekend.
