About 5.15pm emergency services were called to Eurabba Lane at Bribbaree, approximately 70kms north west of Young, after a crash between a freight train and a b-double truck.
The crash occurred on a private road with a level rail crossing.
Police say the impact of the collision caused the prime mover to disconnect from its trailers, rotate about 180 degrees and be pushed about 20 to 30 metres along the rail line.
Initial inquiries, according to police, indicate two male occupants were ejected from the truck.
The impact caused an explosion which started a grass fire and damage to the side of the train.
Emergency services responded however upon arrival both men were found dead.
Police, NSW Ambulance paramedics from Young and Grenfell, Grenfell NSW Fire and Rescue, Grenfell SES, and numerous NSW Rural Fire Service tankers from surrounding areas responded.
RFS extinguished the grass fire.
Police established a crime scene which was examined into the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The men are yet to be formally identified, however police believe one was aged in his 50s and the other in his 20s.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
The train line between Stockinbingal and Quandialla was expected to be closed until 7am on Wednesday.
Inspector Jacob Reeves of Young Police said it was a distressing scene.
"It was very traumatic and very distressing for family and friends of the men and also the train crew. Police are mindful of the impact the crash has on the surrounding community," he said.
