The players and spectators numbering about 600-700 were greeted by mild spring conditions and the new Lawson Park complex that was about to be in operation for the first time.
It was a top day of Rugby League and the locals received a number of compliments about the new facility.
The Grenfell Senior and Junior Rugby League clubs consider themselves to be very fortunate to have the use of such a great complex.
The on field action saw the day start with a 12 all draw in the under 13s development game and then in the under 14s last years premiers the Brumbies defeated a brave Woodbridge outfit 32-18.
The remaining three matches resulted in big wins to the Woodbridge Women, Under 16s (52-6), Under 18s (54-8), and First Grade (52-0).
In other round one results the Vipers (Orange) won all four matches against the Platypi (Bathurst) at Wallerawang whilst at Gilgandra the Castlereagh Cougars and Goannas (Dubbo) shared the spoils with the former taking out the 16s and 18s and the latter the 14s and First Grade.
Round two sees another home game for Woodbridge when they host the Panorama Platypi at Canowindra this Sunday with the Under 13s development game kicking off proceedings at 9.30am followed by the Under 14s (10.40am), Under 16s (11.50am), Under 18s (1.10pm), and the day will conclude with the First Grade game at 2.30pm.
The other round two clashes will be played on Saturday when the Midwest Brumbies host the Wiradjuri Goannas at Mudgee and the Castlereagh Cougars will travel to Orange to take on the Vipers.
The Grenfell Goannas Senior Rugby League Committee would like to thank everyone who helped make Sunday a success.
A good deal of work went on prior to the day and during the day as we had to prepare for not only our first home game of the year but also our first in the new facility and at the same time satisfy the Covid requirements.
There was a combined effort between members of the Senior and Junior clubs to help out with the playing surface preparation, canteen, scoring & timekeeping, hundred club, and the morning set-up and end of day clean-up.
We also need to thank the staff at the Weddin Shire Council for their assistance in the last month with getting the playing surface and surrounds into tip top shape.
Mark Sunday, November 8 in your calendar as the Woodbridge women will be back in action at Lawson Park against the Orange Vipers.
