As a culmination of all their hard work, Stage 2 students kicked off the PBL celebrations on the last Tuesday of Term 2 with a Traditional Campfire and Poetry Reading day.
Students enjoyed reciting poetry, toasting marshmallows and cooking damper on the campfires.
As part of the Stage Two poetry unit, students have been creating new words.
They have been playing with portmanteaus; a portmanteau is when two words are combined such as smog (smoke and fog) or brunch (breakfast and lunch).
Can you guess these portmanteaus the students created?
- Kiug
- Stueacher
- Lunea
- Dight

Poetry review
'What Is Red?' - Review by Penny Hughes
'What is Red?' is a poem by Mary O'Neill.
She described red as being lots of things like roses, sunsets and fire engines.
Mary also used feelings associated with red such as anger, mad, embarrassment and love.
One of devices that Mary used was imagery.
Imagery is the use of descriptive language and literary devices to create a 'mental image' for the reader.
An example of imagery is 'Red is a sunset, blazing and bright.'
I believe Mary used imagery to make it more interesting and appeal to the reader.
Another device that Mary used was alliteration.
Alliteration is three words in a row or close by that start with the same letter.
An example of an alliteration is 'Red is a red, red, rose'.
I believe that Mary used alliteration to make rhythm and it memorable for the reader.
Another device that Mary applied was personification.
Personification is when a non-human object being comes to life.
For example, 'a sign that says WATCH OUT!'
I believe that Mary used personification to make it more interesting for the older kids.
