On the same morning that the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in the Weddin Local Government Area Mr Liebich wanted to appeal to all locals to adhere to the new rules implemented by the Federal and State Governments to help stop the spread and protect the local area.

"After the recent bushfires, the current drought, floods and now the Covid-19 Coronavirus we are certainly experiencing challenging unprecedented times in Australia and in particular the Weddin Shire," he said.

"As we all respond to the challenges of COVID -19 Coronavirus we are currently taking measures to safeguard the health and wellbeing of Councillors, staff and community members."

Mr Liebich said that Council's top priority is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all local residents.

"Protecting the health and safety of all of these groups is a top priority as is protecting the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions."

Mr Liebich stressed the need for locals to be aware of hygiene and social distancing measures.

"There are a number of measures we can all take to eliminate or reduce the risk of contracting this potentially deadly virus such as undertaking social distancing measures whereby we reduce the number of close physical and social contacts we have with one another, avoiding mass crowds and gatherings, avoiding small gatherings in enclosed spaces and avoid generally having contact with other people," he said.

"If we all adhere to the legislation and regulations the Federal and State Governments are introducing we will all get through this together in a fit and healthy state."

The Mayor also called on locals to be patient with there being no knowledge of how long the COVID-19 situation lasting.

"As it is not clear when this virus will be eliminated it is important that we are patient, caring and respectful of each other in dealing with this pandemic."

He also wanted to thank the Weddin Shire community for its understanding and for already taking steps to follow the protocols set up by all levels of Government.
