AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS IN QUANDIALLA: Australia Day started in Quandialla with the Pool opening at 8am for the Bush Nippers, followed by the Aqua fitness group and a delicious egg and bacon roll breakfast. The Community BBQ was once again held at the Bland Hotel. The Weddin Shire Australia Day Ambassador, Andrew Lock OAM, was our special guest, who arrived early which allowed him to be introduced to those already in attendance and enjoy a drink and chat before the Ceremony.
The ceremony started with a welcome by Robert Reeves, President of the Quandialla Progress Association, who introduced Andrew and spoke briefly about his many achievements. Robert then handed the mic over to Mr Locke, who had the crowd's full attention when he spoke about his life as a mountaineer, giving glimpses into his many achievements and the risks overcome after setting that initial goal at the age of 21. Many had the opportunity to speak at length to Andrew during the evening, finding his accounts of his many climbs and how he went about funding the expeditions very enlightening.
Andrew went on to present the Quandialla Public School Youth Award, which was awarded to Summer Dixon. Summer was nominated for her enthusiastic approach to learning and her attributes of citizenship. She is a thoughtful student whose natural instinct is to involve everyone and lend a helping hand wherever it is needed.
A good crowd attended the celebration and enjoyed BBQ meat and an array of delicious salads. The meal was enjoyed at tables either on the beautiful green lawns, under the recently installed misting fans or inside in the air-conditioned dining room. Our thanks go to Dan, Jeremy, Gaye and Les for providing such a great venue. (Text courtesy of Mrs Sue Priestley. Photos courtesy Marlene Taylor).
GRENFELL GARDEN CLUB: Following the Grenfell Garden Club's annual open gardens, the group kindly donated a $1000 to the Grenfell Lions Club for the purchase and installation of two seats at the Lions Park at the Railway Station.
Past President Chris Moran organised the seats made by his daughter (Beccali Furniture) in Greenacre. Many thanks to Andy Stevens for transporting the seats to Grenfell and to Matt McCann - Macrete for laying and donating the foundations for same.
The seats were installed in time for Christmas and have already been put to good use.
President of the Garden Club, Chris Lobb said "These were funded by our Club from money raised at the 2019 Open Gardens. Another community project and our Christmas Gift to Grenfell." Lions President Terry Carroll thanked Chris for the beautiful gifts, and they were photographed with the finished products.
VISITING FROM WEETHALIE: Lain and Dave Thiel enjoyed a visit from Lain's brother and sister in law, Raymond "Mon" and Gloria MacKellar from Weethalie.
Mon comes to Grenfell on a regular basis to visit the local Chiropractor and always takes time to visit the family. Whilst in town the group enjoyed a lovely luncheon at Unwind.
FORGET THE DROUGHT DAY: Grenfell Lions Club will be hosting a free family get together at the Lions Park at the Station on Sunday, February 23.
In November 2019 a group "The Drought Ride"/ "Beat the Breakdown" cycled from Molong to Grenfell and back visiting small towns on the way raising awareness to mental health and raising money. Lions will have their jumping castles for the littlies, THLHS Leo Club member will assist with the face painting as well enjoy live music from some of our local talented musicians. Forget the drought, let your hair down and come and enjoy this free day - Sunday 23 from 12noon - 4pm.
