John Leslie Scott, 52, appeared for sentencing on January 15 for a string of firearm-related offences and an intimidation charge.

He was issued multiple community corrections orders with a condition to abstain from alcohol for 12 months.

According to facts, Scott had been consuming alcohol at a pub in Grenfell on December 12, 2019, before getting involved in an argument with the victim and threatening to shoot their pet greyhounds.

The police statement tendered to the court says Scott walked towards the greyhound kennel with a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition.

Police were called and when they attended, Scott walked towards them with his hands up. When he was placed under arrest he informed police of an unregistered firearm with ammunition nearby, and he advised that he's not licensed to possess the firearm.

He was charged with possess ammunition without permit, possess unauthorised firearm, not keep firearm safe, handle firearm under influence of alcohol, possess unregistered firearm, and intimidation.

Scott, after pleading guilty at the first possible opportunity, was convicted on all charges and the firearm and ammunition was forfeited. His solicitor told the court it was the first time Scott had come to the attention of police, and he's taken steps to "turn things around".

"These are serious offences. The ingestion of alcohol and handling of a weapon can be a fatal cocktail," Magistrate Michael O'Brien said.

About 4pm on Wednesday, January 15 Grenfell police stopped a green Ford on Weddin Street, Grenfell for a random breath test.

The driver, a 37-year-old man of Grenfell, returned a negative reading however was unable to produce a licence. Police made inquiries which revealed that the man's licence had been cancelled.

The man will appear before Young Local Court on February 12, 2020.
