The show, a crime thriller with an unconventional three-pronged narrative structure, is helmed by Launceston-based showrunner Vicki Madden, of The Kettering Incident fame, and premieres on New Year's Day via streaming service Stan.

Matt Testro plays Freddie Hopkins in the $18 million series, filmed in Hobart, which also stars Emma Booth, Ewen Leslie and Aaron Pedersen.

He had a prominent role in teen drama series Nowhere Boys and will appear in the upcoming Australian sci-fi film 2067.

Mr Testro said shows like The Gloaming were "all too rare" nowadays.

"[The Gloaming is] something that dares to be different, that holds its secrets close," he said. "[It's] something [that] can be both beautiful and horrifying to look at, all at the same time."

"When you add to that a brilliant team of creative minds, in front of and behind the camera ... it becomes an unmissable piece of Australian television.

"I couldn't think of a project more fitting to launch the Aussie film industry into the next decade."

Mr Testro said the show had captivated him as soon as he'd read his character brief.

"That was enough," he said. "I was hooked by the tone of the show and I'm a sucker for a good thriller."

"When I was reading through the first of Freddie's scenes, I knew it was the kind of part that every actor longs for.

"It was deep, volatile, complex and beautifully written.

"Straight away I wanted to be a part of bringing The Gloaming to life."

The Gloaming, which consists of eight episodes, is being distributed internationally by the Disney-owned ABC Studios.

It boasts an all-star roster of directors, including Wolf Creek's Greg McLean, American Horror Story and Battlestar Galactica's Michael Rymer and Wentworth's Sian Davies.

Ms Madden previously told The Examiner that grief was at the fore of the show.

"My mother was quite ill when I started writing [it], and then she died just before we started filming," she said.

"I was really thinking about grieving and how it all works, and the gloaming itself - the word - is a space in between, a space between day and night and twilight."
