NOSTALGIC VISIT: Gai Higgins and her children, Jason, Ian, Angela and Trina and their partners and family enjoyed a nostalgic visit to Grenfell recently. Gai and her late husband Brian lived and worked in Grenfell/Quandialla with some of their children being born at the Grenfell Hospital.
The group enjoyed a visit to Quandialla, where a dedication of a plaque was performed for Brian's work in the area.
Whilst in town they stayed at the Grenfell Motel and enjoyed a fun filled afternoon playing pool at the Railway Hotel. The family get together each year around the same time for family reunion and a pool competition.
THE DROUGHT RIDE: The ride is an initiative aimed at bringing together the cycling community in a supportive event that rides directly through some of the hardest hit landscapes and communities bringing both financial relief and a morale boosting presence. Cyclists are renowned for stepping up and offering aid and further showing their commitment through time dedicated to training in order to raise funds where needed.
Around 50 riders and crew cycled into Grenfell on Saturday afternoon for an overnight stay in the town.
Riders stayed at the Grenfell Motel and the Albion Hotel where they enjoyed a beautiful meals and fellowship.
Mayor Mark Liebich and representatives from a number of the small surrounding towns joined the group for the evening.
With two ride distance options on day one and a single return ride option on day two they covered a total of 330kms over the weekend. Not only were they riding through the direct path of drought stricken land, they stopped in affected towns and farming communities.
By employing the services of small businesses such as pubs, cafes and restaurants they ensure that every cent raised through partnerships, registrations and fundraising goes directly into these communities and provide some relief.
On Friday they arrived in Molong for a briefing followed by drinks and an overnight stay, departing next morning for their 195km (or shorter ride145km) to Grenfell.
Following breakfast at Rosa's Café, the group cycled to the Grenfell Silos for a photo shoot prior to their ride back to Molong via Gooloogong and Canowindra.
