A new program challenging children to read 1,000 books with their parents before they start school aims to foster a love of reading and develop essential literacy skills is being launched at Storytime on Wednesday 16 October.

To help parents, older siblings and other carers reach the 1000-book goal, they can pick up a registration form at the Grenfell Public Library.
Children will receive certificates to celebrate their achievements in reaching milestones of numbers of books read.
The library offers a twice monthly Storytime activities for families during school term which all books read during the session are included within the count. Free access to both Story Box and BorrowBox are also included within the count of books.
It is "imperative" for children to start reading early in life. Being read to as a baby and toddler, and engaging with books before even starting school, has life-long rewards.
Regular reading can expand children's vocabularies, increase their cognitive skills and ensure that they are school ready, which can instil greater confidence and in turn generate more excitement among children.
A one thousand-book target may seem like a huge challenge; however, it can easily be achieved one book, one day at a time. The benefits of reading to young children every day, is backed by overwhelming evidence.
It is commonly known that introducing children to books early has a lot of benefits. Be it social or bonding. Reading stimulates creativity and helps with literacy.
The 1000 Books Before School program was a 2014 initiative of Gunnedah Shire Library and has won many awards and has been successfully adopted in many libraries.
