Racing
Watched by a very big crowd the Royal Randwick trained Falcon Island raced to victory on Sunday in the $75,000 Geronimo-New Holland Agriculture Coonamble Cup.
From the high profile stables of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the five year old gelding Falcon Island was ridden by heavyweight jockey Rory Hutchings who initially came to Australia as the champion Apprentice in New Zealand, at the invitation of leading trainer Chris Waller.
Hutchings now rides at 61kg which was ideal for Falcon Island as the horse did not carry any extra lead as the 61kg topweight for the 1600 metres Cup.
Falcon Island ( $2.70 favourite ) enjoyed a charmed run behind the leaders before dashing to a winning break at the top of the straight and crossing the line over two lengths clear of the Peter Sinclair, Moree trained Free Billy ( Clayton Gallagher, $15 ) and Magic Over The Bay ( Greg Ryan, $7.50 ) trained at Narromine by Wayne Collison.
Grant Buckley played a starring role with four winners at Coonamble including the Dennis Bush, Forbes trained Molasses in the $35,000 Keady Family Crystal Sprint Over 1200 metres.
Owned by Danny Kotel, the Grenfell Picnic Race Club President, Molasses ( $10 ) settled well back in the field and came with a rush to beat the leader Kenny Succeed ( Jake Pracey-Holmes, $8.50 ) and Good Time Charlie ( Andrew Banks, $7.50 ).
Grant Buckley commenced the day with a popular win in the Halcroft and Bennett- Kia Ora Feedlot- Adam Robinson Maiden Plate ( 1100 metres ) on Gisela's Crown ( $7.50 ) trained at Wyong by Damien Lane, formerly from Coonamble.
Well ridden by Grant Buckle the Gayna Williams, Mudgee trained American Storm ( $14 ) overcame an outside barrier in a field of 14 to lead most of the way in the 1400 metres On-Site Fuel Rural Class 1 Handicap.
The Troy O'Neile, Tamworth trained three year old filly Cassy's Sister ( $2.05 favourite ) completed a big day for Grant Buckley when leading all the way to win the Gallagher Insurance Brokers Class 2 Handicap ( 1100 metres ) from Contalmaison ( Greg Ryan, $3.50 ) and In Fiore ( Clayton Gallagher, $10 ).
Champion jockey Greg Ryan was a popular man with both punters and connections of the winner when Kahlo ( $1.65 favourite ) held on gamely to win the 1300 metres Dad and Dave Turf Maiden Handicap by a nose from Florida Girl ( Tony Cavallo, $8.50 ) with Wee Lassie ( Yvette Lewis, $3.10 ) in third place.
Clint Lundholm formerly from Coonamble and now of Dubbo is the trainer of Kahlo which is part owned by Ray Canham from Coonamble and Peter Caralon from Dubbo.
Restricted to country trained horses the $50,000 Nalder Family Country Magic Class Three Handicap ( 1600 metres ) resulted in an all the way win for the Mack Griffith, Mudgee trained Vineyard ( Ashley Morgan, $14 ) from Derby Star ( Aaron Bullock, $1.60 fav.) and We Can't Be Beaten ( Grant Buckley, $11 ).
Collarenebri races this year were called off due to the drought however the village was kept in the spotlight when the only trainer from there, Kelly Smith, won the Brian and Wendy Fletcher Benchmark 66 Handicap ( 1400 metres ) with Ayham.
Reaching the lead close to home Ayham ( Brooke Stower, $13 ) finished a half length in front of Sugar Lane ( Chelsea Ings,$101 ) and the third place dead heaters Blue Collar Boy ( Michael Heagney, $7 ) And Percussion ( Billy Cray,$31 ).

Ken Waterford, the Coonamble Jockey Club President, described the amount raised by the Coonamble community as incredible as the area has been enduring a severe and long term drought.
