The August meeting of the Grenfell Combined Probus Club was chaired by President, Ron Huckel, who welcomed 58 members and one visitor, Mavis Droegemuller's daughter, Ruth Stein.
The reading of the July Minutes by Secretary, Halleen Schaefer, was followed by the correspondence and the Treasurer's Report for the month of July, presented by Treasurer, Brian McDonald. Ron Huckel won the draw for birthday of the month, after Social Secretary Rosalie White read Birthdays and Wedding anniversaries.
Esma Baker gave the Tourist Report, reminding members of the Barrington Tops Trip leaving Loader's depot at 8 am on Monday, 16th September and that a Mystery Trip is being planned.
Cowra Ladies Probus Club have a 3-day trip planned with Loaders to the Hawkesbury/Blue Mountain area on October 2nd, at a cost of $540, singles $645 and those interested should contact Brian McDonald.
Brian McDonald reported that 6 members had attended West Wyalong Probus Birthday luncheon and enjoyed a very sociable afternoon.
Beverley Kelly reported on the 41st Lion's Changeover Dinner at the Country Club with the interesting comment that the Lions had raised the amazing amount of $33,272 - an incredible service to the Grenfell Community. Beverley also reported on the Red Cross Annual Meeting on 26th July.
Graham Fisher was nominated as Second Vice President by Beverley and duly elected.
After morning tea our Speech Contest Co-ordinator Jan Holland introduced our Annual Probus Speaking Contest for The Henry Lawson High School students, with 8 participants -5 in the Junior Section and 3 in the Senior Section who all displayed knowledge and excellent preparation with a wide variety of topics.
Junior participants were Nikki Chalker - "Gender Equality in Rugby Union", Oscar Schaefer - "My Ancestral History", Riley Cartwright - "Americans needs to change their gun laws", all in Year 9, Amelia Squires, Year 8 - "Invasion of Cancer" and Emmerson Squires, Year 7 -"All the people I call home".
Senior participants were Tara Schaefer, Year 11 - "Leadership", Anna Hunt, Year 10 - "The Little Things in Life" and Connor Day, Year 12 - "Leadership".
The judges, Oriel Draffin and Stephen Griffin, saying it had been a very close contest and congratulating all contestants, then announced the winners-Connor Day First and Anna Hunt Second in the Senior Section with Riley Cartwright First and Oscar Schaefer Second in the Junior Section.
The People's Choice was then announced by Janice, being Connor and Oscar.
Janice thanked all those involved, especially Emma Griffin, the School Co-ordinator, Pam Holland for time keeping and the two judges, presenting gifts of appreciation.
As announced above, our next meeting will be our Birthday Luncheon to be held on Monday, 30th September, commencing at 12 for 12.30 pm at the Bowling Club, with Ann Amour and Pam Holland on the Door Roster.
