The term has been applied to both of the days on which the initial announcement of Japan's surrender was made - to the afternoon of August 15, 1945, in Japan, and because of time zone differences, to August 14, 1945 (when it was announced in the United States and the rest of the Americas and Eastern Pacific Islands) - as well as to September 2, 1945, when the signing of the surrender document occurred, officially ending World War II.
Each year Local Service women have a get together to commemorate VP Day and they enjoyed a beautiful afternoon tea at Unwind.
Kath Smith WAAAF who joined up in Deniliquin and served in Melbourne in 1942, Teddy Simpson WAAAF who joined up in 1943, served in Sydney, Melbourne and Townsville and Margaret Knight WRAAF, RSL Chaplain joined in Sydney in 1960 and served in Melbourne and Adelaide and from 1962 -1965 served at HQ Provo unit in Melbourne.
Unfortunately, ex-service woman Eunice Clarke was unable to attend owing to medical reasons. Hope you are on the mend soon Eunice.
The Battle of Long Tan (Long Tan Rubber Plantation) August 18, 1966 was Australia's greatest victory in the ten year involvement in Vietnam and is widely known as one of the fiercest battles fought by Australian soldiers, who faced wet and muddy conditions due to torrential rain and the loss of their radios.
From reports, I believe that Col Joye and Little Pattie were entertaining troops whilst this battle was being fought
On Sunday evening at 6pm on the 53rd anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan at the cenotaph in Grenfell, RSL members, National Servicemen, Vietnam Vets who served our country, Grenfell Cadets as well as townsfolk were present to commemorate and remember.
VISITING SPAIN: Pam and Rob Livingstone were recently on tour in Spain. Imagine their surprise when they were able to sit with Picasso in Malaga, on the Costa del Sol, coast of the Mediterranean.
Picasso was born in Malaga and although he didn't live there very long, regarded it as home. In 2003, the Picasso Museum Malaga opened in a converted palace, containing 285 of his works donated by family.
Hugh Moffitt said, "Did you ask Picasso if he'd be interested in doing a one man show at the Grenfell Gallery."
WRONG BIAS: Albert Ham, Arthur Gates, Dennis Allen and Paul Burke from the Picnic Point Bowling Club enjoyed a three day visit to Grenfell last week and were hosted by their good friend Col Meyers. Col and Paul are old school friends.
The visitors wish to thank Grenfell bowlers who came out three days in a row for fun and fellowship.
At Picnic Point they have a jar similar to a swear jar and each time someone sends a bowl down on the wrong bias they must put in a donation.
The Picnic Point Men's Bowls Club have adopted Grenfell Bowling Club as a sister club and hope to make this an annual event. They are hoping that all club in their Zone 12 adopt a country town and enjoy a visit each year.
Prior to coming to Grenfell, they had $200 in the donation tin and after a whip around at their club increased it to $500.
The Club contacted the CWA Evening Branch and offered them the donation to be used as they thought best.
As well as the donation, hobbyist Dennis Allen donated a beautiful hand made clock to the CWA Evening Branch to be used as a fundraising raffle. Treasurer of the CWA Evening Branch Lain Thiel and Publicity Officer/photographer Deidre Carroll were on hand to receive the donation and thank the bowlers.
21ST BIRTHDAY: Olivia Hooper was treated to a very special 21st birthday celebration at Kembla Grange Races on Saturday, August 17.
Family including her dad Andrew, brother Jack and sister Jade, grandparents from Orange and cousins and friends from different part of NSW travelled to celebrate and catch up.
FOOTY FEVER: Jennifer, Stephen and Angus Kelly and Jeff, Carolyn and Stephanie Davies enjoyed a night to dinner at the Railway Hotel.
Dressed in their Aussie footy gear to watch the Bledisloe Cup, they were hoping for another great win over New Zealand.
That was not to be, hence they had to have a photo with the New Zealand Publican Noel.
