CAMEL RACING - FORBES
By Colin Hodges
Destined to make a one way trip on a truck from Kings Creek in the Northern Territory to an export abattoir at Peterborough in South Australia, Hookemup at the last minute found a new home and has since become the undisputed champion on the camel racing circuit.
Before a crowd of several thousand at Forbes racecourse on Good Friday, the Anesbury Racing, South Australian trained Hookemup trounced a good field in the $3,750 Forbes Shire Council Camel Cup. Aaron Sweeney, originally from Ireland and now a successful jockey on the professional horse racing circuit, travelled from Queanbeyan to again ride Hookemup in the 400 metres Cup. From the outside barrier, Hookemup quickly crossed to the inside rail and led throughout to win by over three lengths from Blinx ridden by Troy Richardson and trained at Yeppoon, Queensland by John Richardson. Neville Good from Dubbo who is the professional judge for horse racing meetings in the central west was using the computerised photo finish equipment but could not seperate for third place the Rod Sansom, Newcastle trained Live Action (Chantelle Jannese) and My Mate McCardle ridden by Kate Osman for Anesbury Racing.
The $1400 Stuart Brown Memorial Plate was won by the Rod Sansom trained Spice ( Chantal Jannese ) while the $800 Consolation Final was won by Barracudda trained by Anesbury Racing and ridden by Skye Drummond.
Trained at Shepparton by Glenda Sutton, Outlaw Bobaluie at 27 is the oldest racing Camel in Australia and has been racing for 22 years.
