During the Sunday walk at Company Dam last September, the group recorded 34 species including Speckled Warblers and the two resident Black-fronted Dotterels.
The Sunday walk concludes a weekend of birding in Grenfell, as members of Birding NSW carry out their fifteenth bird survey around the Weddin Shire.
The surveys have been carried out every autumn and spring since 2011, except for September 2016 when flooding prevented the survey from going ahead.
The upcoming survey weekend will see a different landscape as the drought takes hold around the Weddin Shire.
Between twenty five and thirty people usually attend the survey weekend and although most participants are from Sydney, last September’s survey weekend saw five local residents take part. During that weekend eighty species of birds were recorded, with a total of 1,234 individual birds seen.
The site with the most species was on “Rosemont”, Holy Camp Rd, amongst a wide, ten year old planting of trees and shrubs, where 21 bird species were recorded during the 20 minute survey.
There are thirty survey sites located throughout the Weddin Shire and about a third of them are on private properties with the remainder in state forests or along roadsides.
The Weddin Shire was originally selected by Birding NSW as a suitable area within the South West Slopes Key Biodiversity Area (KBA), as the Club’s contribution to the monitoring of KBA sites in NSW.
Please come along and join us on Sunday March 24 and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Company Dam Flora and Fauna reserve while learning about our local birdlife.
Bookings are not necessary but if you would like more information contact Weddin Landcare Coordinator Mikla Lewis on 0499 199 016 or weddin@lachlandcare.org.au.
