The three Woodbridge Cup teams made the long trek to Baradine last Saturday to take on the Castlereagh Cup girls in the final round of the competition proper.

They were greeted with very hot and humid conditions that eventually resulted in a storm with torrential rain and lightning during the under 15s game.

The Woodbridge under 15s had a hard fought 34-8 victory over a well-organised Castlereagh team with the score not indicating the closeness of the match.

The players in this game had to leave the field on two separate occasions due to the severity of the storm.

The Woodbridge under 18s tried hard in going down 44-6 but they were well down on troops due to injuries and representative commitments.

The opens game was very tight with Castlereagh ending up 26-16 winners over a gallant Woodbridge Cup team.

The opens were also missing key personnel due to injuries and representative commitments and were on the wrong end of a heavy penalty count.

This Sunday sees the semi-finals being held at Wellington for the under 15s and Opens with the Grand Finals for these 2 divisions being played the following weekend.

The Woodbridge Cup opens did not qualify for the finals however, the undefeated under 15s will clash with the Orange Vipers at 10am on Sunday.

The Woodbridge under 18s did make the finals but their semi-final will be played on the weekend of the March 23/24 at a venue yet to be determined.

FISHER AND HAZELL WIN TENNIS

Round 5 of the Men"s Summer/Autumn Night Tennis Competition was played on Tuesday and the winners of the round were the consistent Grant Fisher and his partner for the night, Pat Hazell.

They played well to win a total of 26 games. Grant and Pat won three of their sets 6/2, 5/3, 7/1 and battled away in the other 2 sets to tie 4/4.

Great tennis for the men.

Next best pair was Grahame Edwards and Mark Liebich winning 23 games after some very close sets which were 5/3, 4/4, 3/5, 5/3, 6/2.

Andrew Bucknell and Rod Freudenstein were next best winning a total of 21 games.

Andrew and Rod played good tennis to win three of their sets 6/2, 5/3, 5/3 and went down in their other two sets 2/6, 3/5.

Anthony Wilson and Rick Power also played consistent tennis to win 20 games for the round. Sets were 3/5, 3/5, 5/3, 5/3, 4/4.

Graham Watt and Arnold Brown had an enjoyable night's tennis to win 19 games.

Their very close sets were 5/3, 5/3, 3/5, 3/5, 3/5.

Plenty of tennis for the four men.

The other pair playing in Round 5, Steve Walker and John Walmsley battled away in their sets to win 11 games.

It was good to see all players in the competition on the courts and no fill ins were required. Round 6 will be played next Tuesday night, weather permitting.

COPPSIES FLOPPSIES ROLLS 'EM

Round 5 of the Mixed Teams Tennis Competition was played on Wednesday night and the team Coppsies Floppsies had a comfortable win over Rollsies Rabble winning 36 games to 28.

Playing for Coppsies Floppsies were Peter Mitton, Danny Joyce, Jan Myers and Lyn Peterson and for Rollsies Rabble were Damien Briggs, Alex McAlpine, Xan McAlpine and Lyndell Rolls.

In the other match, The Lone Rangers were in fine form to down Odds and Sods 39 games to 25 games after having some good competitive tennis.

Playing for the Lone Rangers were Craig Johnson, Paul Lynch, Maria Neill and Leanne Livingstone and for Odds and Sods the players were Stuart McKellar, Leigh Taylor, Margo Taylor and Courtney Taylor.

The team, Bogolong and Beyond had the bye.

Teams in this competition have now played one complete round and will play another five rounds before the competition is finalised.

SUCCESSFUL NIGHT

The Tennis Quiz Night held on Thursday, March 7 was very successful and coverage of the event will be reported in a later edition of The Grenfell Record.

It was pleasing to have a visit by our former tennis champion, Alan Heathcote who travelled down from Lennox Heads to play in the West Waylong Teams Tournament this weekend.

He wished to be remembered to all his friends at Grenfell.

The 2019 Bromar Engineering Grenfell Rodeo will take place on Saturday May 11 at the showground. All the action will kick off at 10am and wind up around 8pm.

Come along for a great family day out! This will be Grenfell's third annual Rodeo.

Events included are open bull ride, saddle bronc and bareback, ladies barrel racing, steer wrestling and undecorating, as well as novice and junior events.

Affiliated with ABCRA, the biggest Rodeo and Campdrafting association in Australia, this is a full points rodeo with over 300 entries expected.

Entry is $15 for adults, 12-17 and pensioners $10 or grab a family pass for $40.
