HORSE RACING
Race Review by Colin Hodges –
Bred and raced by Rodger and Nerida Atkinson from Yeoval, the seven year old gelding Dapperized took out the $32,000 QUBE Logistics Cotton Cup (1600 metres ) before a very good crowd at Warren on Sunday.
Produced from the former brilliant sprinter Beautiful Dapper, Dapperized is trained at Mudgee by Gayna Williams and had top jockey Greg Ryan in the saddle.
Tracking Hammoon Bridge ( Mathew Cahill, $4.60 equal favourite ) from the outset, Dapperized ( $7 ) eventually wore down the leader to win by a short neck with Steamin ( Kath Bell-Pitomac, $10 ) finishing third.
Earlier, the Brett Thompson, Gulgong trained Fairy Fragments ( $4.40 ) owned by Rodger and Nerida Atkinson and ridden by Greg Ryan had come from well back to win the 1400 metres Complete Asset Management Benchmark 58 Handicap.
First leg of a treble for Greg Ryan was Dusky Damsel ( $4.60 fav.) trained by Clint Lundholm who also won with Beechal ( $2.60 fav.) ridden by Mathew Cahill.
Molasses, trained at Forbes by Dennis Bush for Danny Kotel from Grenfell, completed a feature race double when winning the ( 1200 metres ) Sky Racing Warren Jockey Club Sprint. At the previous start Molasses had won 1100 metres Cup Day Sprint at Coonabarabran.
Again well ridden by Eleanor Webster-Hawes, Molasses ( $4.80 ) travelled third to the home turn then took the lead and held off Know How ( Brandon Griffiths, $51 ) and Zoutenant ( Ken Dunbar, $5.50 ) and in the process took career prizemoney earnings past the $100,00 mark.
At the corresponding Warren meeting in 2017 jockey Daniel Northey won on A Martin Place Pick, his last winner before suffering a broken pelvis in a barrier stalls accident and being on the sidelines for almost twelve months.
Therefore, it was a popular win when the well liked Daniel Northey came with a late run on the Rodney Northam, Scone trained Lope De Mango ( $21 ) to snatch a three way photo finish win over Fourth Protocol ( Jake Pracey-Holmes, $41 ) and Late Return ( Mathew Cahill, $5 ) in the ( 1000 metres ) Landmark Operations Benchmark 58 Handicap.
Final event at Warren, the Kurri Kurri Boys Class 2 Handicap ( 1600 metres ) saw a surprise result when the Connie Greig, Dubbo trained Moralto ( Andrew Banks $41 ) from the back of the field arrived in time to beat El Rey Dorado (Greg Ryan, $5.50) and Unresolved (Tony Cavallo, $6.50).
*************************************
Melbourne Cup Day 2018 will be long remembered by Bathurst trainer Paul Theobald and Gulgong jockey Alan Barton as the time when they combined to win 4 of the 5 races at Gosford Picnics with Born To Power ( $3.50 ),Rise Me Up ( $3 ), Red Marauder ( $3.20 favourite ) and Attilius ( $2.30 favourite ).
Al their winners led throughout including Attilius, winner of the Gosford Picnic Cup ( 1200 metres ) by over three lengths from Kate’s Pearl ( Ricky Blewitt, $4.20 ) and Dark Elixir, Mollie Partridge,$7 ).
Attilius at recent starts had won the Young Picnic Cup and a TAB race at Orange.
Paul Theobald trained 3 winners at the Marthaguy Picnics at Quambone while the best past result for Alan Barton was 4 winners at Noumea in New Caledonia when riding as a professional jockey.
Bathurst to race on Saturday and Dubbo on Tuesday, November 20.
