Did you know, it was a newspaper editor who penned that epigram: Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr of Le Figaro, France, in the mid 1800s. He was speaking to the political and social climate of his era, but it was such a clear-eyed and true insight, it’s stood the test of time.
So too has the Grenfell Record, since its first edition in 1867. The times keep changing, and keep testing us, so our decision to vacate the Main Street office is a considered business case. Sadly, the costs of bringing such an old building up to the standards expected of a modern day work space are simply prohibitive. But let’s be clear: we’re still here.
Our journalist and local sales representative will still be working in town, we will still be holding our monthly regional advertising meeting at the bowling club and our papers will still be proudly on sale in the newsagency, twice a week.
All that changes is, from the end of the month, we will be using a mobile working model. This means Emily Cartwright and Ngaire Soley will be out and about in town, servicing their sales clients and interviewing the many people whose faces and stories make up the Grenfell Record.
In short, our business data shows that advertisers and readers have moved with the times, and are increasingly using mobile and online technologies to reach us, do business, write letters and engage. And we’ve evolved too, with a purpose-built system that allows us to put out a newspaper and run a website from anywhere with an internet connection.
For those who prefer to catch up face-to-face, or to contribute hard copy, we will be advertising where you can meet Ngaire around town and where you can find a dropbox for correspondence. You’ll still see Ngaire (Ph 0448 277 050) out and about covering news; and Emily (Ph 0448 246 379) will be in regular touch with local businesses for their advertising solutions. We’re changing, but we’re staying the same. We’re your Record, Grenfell.
