CARAGABAL PIONEER GRAVES: Maureen Mitchell from Melbourne and her brother John Mitchell from Canberra met with the Weddin Shire Council's Heritage Advisor, Sue Jackson-Stepowski in February 2018.
She visited the gravesite to assess its heritage value for possible placement on NSW Heritage list. The lone graves located on a Caragabal farming property, owned by Adrian Taylor, needed to be restored.
Maureen and John are descended from convicts Peter and Charlotte Kelly (nee Gilbert) who are buried there.
The family is having a Commemoration Day at the Caragabal on Sunday September 30 2018.
(The graves were restored by John’s mother and her Cousin in October 1988 and this get together is to commemorate that event 30 years on.)
The day will commence in the Caragabal Hall in the morning with registration and a few speeches about the history of the people buried in these graves.
Peter Kelly and Charlotte Gilbert were transported in the mid 1800’s. We are descendants of these two people.
After lunch, the group will travel to the graves for people to inspect. These graves are on private property and they will have the permission to enter the property with the guidance of the property owners.
The program for the day is: 10am Registrations, 11.30am Welcome, Kelly family History (MM), 1988 Restoration Story, John Quinn story, Presentations. Commemoration Cake cutting (Betty Hardy or oldest descendant), 12.30 Lunch, 1.30 Photos followed by a grave site visit. 3.30pm return to hall for afternoon.
