A special certificate and prize was awarded to Yetu Akhiwu who came in first place for her age category out of hundreds of entries, congratulations Yetu, a terrific achievement.
Yetu was delighted to receive the award with her parents Elizabeth and Dr Patrick Akhiwu both in attendance for the special presentation.
Mr McCormack was pleased to receive many entries from across the electorate, saying it is as important as it has ever been to remember the sacrifices of the men and women who have fought for peace and freedom in conflicts all over the world.
“A total of 675 students throughout the Riverina and Central West entered the ANZAC Day writing competition this year,” Mr McCormack said.
“It was a difficult process to narrow down the entries to a few winners, but it goes to show the high calibre of our teachers and students in the Riverina and Central West.
“Each and every one of the students who entered should be proud of their efforts.”
Mr McCormack said he always enjoys visiting his home region, the Riverina.
“Being Deputy Prime Minister I really value the opportunity to get out and breathe the country air,” he said.
“I spend my life these days traveling around the nation and to get back to the Riverina which is home for me and to be amongst students and farmers and seeing how they are fairing is just as important to me as speaking to key stake holders about nation building infrastructure in a capital city.”
