Heritage places have value for present and future generations due to their historic, scientific, aesthetic or social values. Places associated with important people or events, that are rare or good examples of their type, landmarks or artifacts attached to buildings (eg a church pulpit) also have heritage value. It is important to preserve all these places.
Weddin Shire Council, in association with the NSW Heritage Office, has established a heritage grants program to assist rate payers who are seeking to undertake heritage conservation work within the Shire. The program will apply to rural, village and town places, including private, public and commercial properties. Weddin Shire’s heritage values include occupied buildings, outbuildings, industrial structures, ruins, cultural landscapes and significant trees, mining sites, fences, streetscapes and views.
Owners and managers of heritage items or items in a conservation area in the 2011 Local Environmental Plan will be given first priority for grants from the local heritage fund. Successful applicants will be reimbursed up to 50% of the cost of conservation. This amount is payable only on completion of the works and receipts submitted to Council. Grant applications will be assessed on their merits and in light of the available funds. The program will fund physical conservation work that enhances the heritage values of Weddin Shire. Conservation work includes restoration and maintenance, and typical projects could include:
* Listed as heritage items in the 2011 Weddin LEP or included in a conservation area;
* Supported by the Council’s Heritage Advisor or other heritage specialist;
* Structural works that will extend the life of an important building;
* Painting in sympathetic colours;
* Repair or replacement of roofing, guttering and drainage; and
* Removal of inappropriate alterations or additions (eg verandah infill, aluminium windows).
Applications must be completed on a Heritage application form available on the website or at Council’s Office. Applications must be received by Council no later than close of business on August 31, 2018.
