A large group of residents gathered at the Community Hub on Thursday, August 2, for the official launch of 15 new Interpretive Street Signs in Grenfell’s Main and George streets.

They were joined by Sally MacLennan from Heritage Near Me, Weddin Shire Heritage Advisor Sue Jackson-Stepowski, Historical Society president Peter Mitton, Weddin Arts & Toursim officer Claire McCann, Shire Mayor Cr Mark Liebich and Cr Carly Brown.
Claire began by welcoming those in attendance and thanked all involved for bringing this terrific heritage project to Grenfell, particularly Auburn Carr, who instigated the project, but was unable to attend the launch. Her comments were relayed to attendees via Claire.
“I’m delighted that this project has come to fruition. It’s been something Grenfell has wanted for many years and I’m so pleased with what we have delivered. I would like to thank all people and organisations who have been part of this project, it was truly a collaborative effort.” said Auburn.
Sally MacLennan then thanked Weddin Shire for taking on the project. “I am excited about taking a walk around town and viewing all of the new heritage information signs, thank you so much for taking on this project, it is great for the town and the Central West,” said Ms MacLennan.
Sue Jackson-Stepowski said that she believes Grenfell should be listed as one of the beautiful towns of NSW due to it’s excellent geographical setting and it’s authentic historic retention. “Auburn Carr and myself spent many, many weeks writing the wording for the signs, we then went over and over them, changed them, had others read them, and then changed them again,” said Ms Jackson-Stepowski.
“The signs needed to have many factors taken into consideration with the main criteria being that locals would read them and be able to interpret information to visitors, it was equally important that visitors would read them and then go away and tell their friends about the fabulous heritage town they visited.”
Mayor Liebich then thanked all involved for helping to promote the towns fabulous heritage significance and everyone associated with the Heritage Near Me signage project.
An information brochure titled ‘Unearth Grenfell’s streetscape’ has also been compiled to assist anyone wanting to take a tour around the town and view the signs.
Following the launch attendees were invited to morning tea and a guided walk around town with Ms Jackson-Stepowski.
