Residents of Grenfell can expect a new TAFE NSW Connected Learning Centre (CLC) to be constructed in the vacant vicinity adjoining George and Melyra Streets, 44-46 George St, with the build scheduled to commence next month.

The package of land was purchased from Weddin Shire Council by TAFE NSW who submitted a development application (DA) for approval. With council being the owner of the purchased land as well as the consent authority for the DA, they engaged the services of a senior town planner from Parkes to undertake an independent assessment of the proposal offered by TAFE NSW to avoid any perception of a potential conflict. The town planner’s report recommended conditional approval of the proposed new TAFE CLC.
The DA for the construction was also put on public display for a period of 28 days where council invited members of the community to submit any concerns they may have regarding the new development. Seven submissions were received from concerned residents regarding the new modern building being constructed in George Street which is a significant heritage setting within the shire.
Weddin Shire Council sought advice from it’s heritage advisor Sue Jackson-Stepowski who made certain recommendations with regard to the original plan design, this was referred to TAFE for their consideration. Council then received an amended design plan that showed changes to the rear of the building which satisfied council’s heritage advice around the George Street area of the construction.
There will be no access to the public from George Street, all vehicles, staff and students will enter from the front of the complex which will face Melyra Street, kerb and guttering as well as a footpath will be constructed to meet up with the existing Forbes Street footpath, a table drain will be built in George Street at the rear of the complex. There will be a covered student area built onto the rear of the building and the roof will extend past the eaves to create a more subtle exterior, the paint colour of the main building has also been taken into consideration to compliment the heritage area, as well as increased landscaping.
