They will now play Steve Galvin and John Joyce this week to decide the championship.
In a tight and entertaining Minor Pairs match on Sunday, junior bowler Rhys Hughes and Martin Betcher (substituting for Denis Hughes) defeated the father-and-son combination of Lindsay and David Ballard.
The score remained fairly even throughout the match, but with two ends remaining Rhys and Martin looked the winners with a lead of 19-13.
However, Lindsay and David rallied, scoring five shots on the 20th end, to trail by one shot, 18-19.
They were holding one shot on the last end, which would have made the scores even, but their hopes of forcing another end to be played were dashed when an on-shot from Martin upset the head, resulting in three shots, making the final score 22-18.
Nominations for the Major/Minor Pairs Championship for 2018 have now closed. A draw has been held and is displayed on the notice board.
Teams can play their matches at any time by mutual arrangement but, once again, the bowls committee would like to see the competition completed without undue delay.
Zone 4 Singles
Championships:
After winning his quarter-final match against Jeff Madden of Lithgow City at Dubbo Railway last weekend, by a convincing margin of 31-19, Grenfell bowler Steve Galvin bowed out of the Zone 4 Senior Championship when he was defeated in the semi-final by Barry Wilkinson of Dubbo Railway.
It was a hard-fought match with Wilkinson winning by the slender margin of 31-27.
Taking advantage of his home-green advantage, Wilkinson went on to defeat Narromine Bowler, Don Sullivan, to take out the Senior Championship.
Blake Bradtke, Grenfell’s contender in the Open Singles was unfortunately forced to forfeit due to illness. We wish Blake a speedy recovery.
Zone 4 Champion of
Champions Pairs:
The winners of our Major Pairs Championship, to be finalised this week, will play in this prestigious competition next weekend at Condobolin. Sectional play in the Singles will be held the following weekend, July 21/22 at West Dubbo, Orange Ex Services, Parkes Railway and Mudgee clubs.
The finals will be played at Molong – the pairs on Saturday, August 4 and the Singles on Sunday, August 5.
Social Bowls:
Cold weather, coupled with some welcome rain, played havoc with social bowls attendance this week, with six bowlers on Friday and just two hardy souls on Sunday.
Wednesday’s reasonable weather attracted 21 bowlers, however, and this week’s prize winners were:
Chooks – Kerry Aston and Barry Jones; Free games – Quentin Murray and Noel Brown; Raffle Vouchers – Ray Walter and Nevin Hughes
Jackpot:
Congratulations to Max Barr, Ted Pickwell and Clive Anderson, who find themselves $33 richer after winning this week’s bowls jackpot.
Max, Ted and Clive were lucky enough to come up with the winning combination of +2 shots on end 11, on an odd-numbered rink. Next week the jackpot will begin again at $34.
