TENNIS –
MITTON AND WALKER ROMP
IN MEN'S WINTER TENNIS
On Tuesday night, Round 3 of the Men's Winter Tennis Competition was played which resulted in another great win by Michael Mitton and his partner Steve Walker, romping in the round with a total of 34 games.
Michael and Steve played top tennis to win all their five sets 6/2, 7/1, 7/1, 8/0, 6/2- well done Michael and Steve. Coming in second for the round were Danny Joyce and Pat Hazell with both players playing consistent tennis to win a total of 22 games. They won their first three sets in fine style, 5/3, 5/3, 6/2 and then levelled the fourth set 4 all and struggled to win games in the last set to go down 2/6.
Charles Harvey and Rick Power had mixed results to win a total of 21 games. Charles and Rick lost their first two sets 2/6, 3/5 then went back on the court to win 8/0 and 6/2. Two pairs won 19 games for the round. They were Graham Watt and Arnold Brown and Grahame Edwards and Rod Freudenstein. Graham and Arnold were in top form to win their first set 8/0, then lost the plot to go down 1/7, 2/6, they then regathered their form to win 6/2, however they struggled in the last set to lose 2/6. Grahame and Rod had mixed results. After losing their first set 3/5, they found good form to win the second set 7/1, and then lost their next two sets 1/7, 2/6. They played good tennis to win the last set 6/2.
The other pair taking part, Leigh Taylor and Ben Walker had little luck in their sets. Leigh was a fill-in for Stuart McKellar. Round 4 of the Men's Winter Night Tennis Competition will be played next Tuesday, July 10, weather permitting.
INTER TOWN TENNIS AT GRENFELL
Round 2 of the Inter Town Tennis Competition was played at Grenfell last Sunday. The round was to have been played on Sunday, June 17 but was washed out by rain, so it was decided to play the round at Grenfell last Sunday. It was mentioned in last week's tennis news the round was to be played at Forbes, however, this was incorrect. Last Sunday after some great tennis, Temora emerged the winners of the competition points.
Hopefully a full report of the day's tennis will appear in a later edition of The Grenfell Record. Round 3 of the Inter Town Tennis Competition will be played at Forbes on Sunday, July 29 and then Round 4 will be played the following Sunday, August 5 at Temora.
Owing to the rain last Thursday, June 28, there was no social tennis played. The forecast for yesterday was favourable for tennis so it should have been a good afternoon for players. Any tennis player is most welcomed to come along for a game commencing at around 1.30 pm.

RUGBY LEAGUE –
GRENFELL AND WOODBRIDGE CUP TEAMS IN ACTION AT LAWSON PARK THIS SATURDAY
Tomorrow at Lawson Park there will be four games of football with the schedule being as follows:
12.00pm Ladies League Tag – Woodbridge Cup v Group 6 Development Squad
1.00pm Under 18s – Woodbridge Cup v Group 6 Development Squad
2.15pm Ladies League Tag – Grenfell Girlannas v Burrangong Bears
3.30pm First Grade – Grenfell Goannas v Burrangong Bears
Last Sunday the Girlannas and Goannas ventured over to Canowindra to take on the Tigers and below are the game reports.
LEAGUE TAG – The match started with each team attempting to get the ascendency over the other and it appeared as though we were in for a tight tussle. At this point the Girlannas clicked into gear and put on a top performance of free running League Tag resulting in a dominant 54 nil victory. The Girlannas earned the praise of their rivals for their ball movement and structured plays and this is the reward for their hard work at training each week. For the Girlannas Rachel Causer picked up the 3 points, players player and scored 2 tries with the other try scorers being Zoe Gavin (2), Holly Bowerman (2), Breanna Anderson, Bridget Baker, Anna Brenner, and Caitlin Dixon. Isabelle Holz a good day with the boot knocking over 7 conversions and the other best and fairest points went to Breanna Anderson (2) and Chloe Madgwick (1). Finally, we want to wish Breanna, Caitlin, Isabelle and Zoe all the best in the Woodbridge Cup Rep game on Saturday.
FIRST GRADE – This was a contest where both teams went try for try for the majority of the match until the final 15 minutes when at 30-28 in front the tigers exerted their authority. The first forty minutes was played at a hectic pace and the hosts held an 18-16 lead at the break and eventually won the match 40-28 after scoring an unconverted try in the dying seconds. The Tigers finished stronger than the Goannas in a quality fixture but there were some key moments for Grenfell with the send-off of their half Ty Ashe (58th Min) and conceding a long distance try from the kick off to the second half to the flying Lachie Robinson. In addition to those moments on four occasions after scoring a try the Goannas could not secure the ball and the tigers were able to go on the attack and prevent the visitors from gaining any momentum. Best and Fairest points went to Sam Ingram (3), Josh Bateman (2), and Phil Ingram (1) with Josh being named the players player. Tries were scored by Phil (3), Sam (2) and Phil piloted over four conversions.
RUGBY UNION –
Last Saturday Grenfell travelled to Condobolin on a high after a big win against Cootamundra the week before. It is always difficult to face up against the Condro Rams, especially with a huge home crowd but the Panther’s rose to the challenge. They took to the field with a few men out of action and within the first ten minutes Grenfell had cemented a solid game platform, playing at their own speed. The forwards out muscled the opposition allowing the men in Black to put the first points on the board.
The game was played very much by the forwards but when the Grenfell backs had opportunity they shone. After half time Condo hit back and had the Panther’s on the back foot. The boys were able to dig deep, making up lost ground. The full time score was 27-14 Grenfell’s way. This weekend we host Canowindra Pythons and would love to see a big home crowd to cheer on the boys as we are currently third on the ladder. The following weekend (July 14) Grenfell has another home game and a massive day of rugby:
