This Sunday we make the trek out to Peak Hill to take on the Roosters in League Tag (12.40pm) and First Grade (2.00pm).
Below are the match reports from last Sunday’s games at Lawson Oval.
LEAGUE TAG
The unbeaten Cargo girls were sharp early and went to a 10 nil lead but the Girlannas settled and posted a try of their own through Holly Bowerman to be down 10-4 at the break.
Cargo scored first after halftime and skipped away to a 14-4 lead however the Girlannas again struck back when Isabelle Holz crossed over out wide and piloted over the tough conversion to be behind by 4.
The remainder of the game saw no more scoring as play swept from one end of the field to the other with Cargo eventually securing a close win against a gallant Grenfell outfit.
Best and Fairest points went to Isabelle Holz (3), Holly Bowerman (2), and Anna Brenner picked up a point as well as the players player.
Although Cargo came away with the win this time the Girlannas played some outstanding League Tag.
Holly Bowerman made it three games out of three when she again was the first try scorer and subsequently put another $140 into the Dean Coldicott coffers.
FIRST GRADE
Grenfell went to a 10 nil lead after 15 minutes of play and it was at this point that the intensity and talk in the game increased with Cargo responding by scoring two converted tries and taking a narrow two point lead.
Sebastian Holz showed plenty of pace to score off a kick with 10 seconds remaining in the first half and the Goannas went to oranges 14-12.
In the second half Grenfell were able to get the all important eight point buffer after a try wide out and a crucial conversion to Mitch Stevens.
When Brendon Hewen crashed over next to the sticks with 15 minutes left on the clock it appeared the Goannas were home but they did not count on the silky skills of veteran half Steve Lane.
Cargo were all over the Goannas for the next 10 minutes and with five left on the clock and the Blue Heelers on the attack and only down by four points it looked like they would seal a comeback victory.
The Goannas were able to pounce on a loose ball and after a break by Mena Aditagane and then with a succession of penalties Phil Ingram scored to secure the two valuable competition points for the home team.
This was a gutsy win by the Goannas as they had a number of players on the sideline due to injuries.
Brendon Hewen picked up the three points and players player with the other points going to Mena Aditagane (2) and Steve Ingram (1).
Try scorers were Sebastian Holz (2), Phil Ingram, Sam Ingram, Mitch Stevens, Brendon Hewen, and Mitch kicked three goals.
Peter Harveyson picked up the $190 first try scorer bonus when Mitch Stevens wearing the number one jersey was the first to cross the stripe for the Goannas.
This (versus Cargo) was a gutsy win by the Goannas as they had a number of players on the sideline due to injuries.
