60TH BIRTHDAY: The Grenfell Bowling Club was the chosen venue for Leslie King’s 60th birthday. The gathering of forty people included her husband, John, her son, Sean, and her daughter Caitlin. Patrick, the youngest child, was unable to attend as he is in Canada enjoying his gap year before embarking on whatever comes next in his life. Other family members who were there to share in the celebration were most of the King family (John’s brothers and sisters and their partners), Trevor Hancock, who John grew up with as his brother, and his partner, and John’s cousin, Brett Hancock.

As well as enjoying a delicious buffet meal of barbecued braised beef, roast chicken, potato gratin and Mediterranean vegetables, the guests listened to a couple of informal speeches from Leslie and her family members. John spoke about meeting Leslie way back in September of 2004 being the best day of his life. Sean highlighted how much he loved camping and fishing trips with his mum. Caitlin’s speech demonstrated her deep appreciation for her mum’s support in whatever interests she wanted to explore as she grew up such as dance, football and Cubs, and Leslie’s willingness to give of her time, for example by becoming a Cub leader, so that Caitlin could enjoy all of the same activities that the male cubs were able to enjoy. Leslie’s speech was about family. She called everyone in the room ‘family’ because to her the definition of family is people who care for, trust, love and respect you. She talked about her Canadian family first. She talked fondly about family camping trips and loving travel at an early age. She wondered whether her parents ever regretted teaching her to be independent and to love travelling so much when it resulted in her moving halfway around the world!
Leslie then talked about her first Australian family, the Hurleys from Springwood, who taught her about all things Australian and inspired her to return on teaching exchanges before she met John and wound up emigrating here for good. She also thanked the King, Hancock, Cub Scout, teaching, camping and Telstra families for their support throughout the years. Her speech demonstrated how grateful she was to be able to celebrate the 60 year milestone surrounded by ‘family’.
WELCOME HOME: Peter and Rebecca Buckley and their children Kate, Brendan and Lachlan jetted in from Denver, Colorado USA recently to enjoy another Australian holiday with family and friends.
Following their arrival, they spent a week on the Gold Coast. Peter’s sister, Charmaine and Alyssa and children Krystal, Jackson and Bryson travelled from Orange, whilst his other sister Kalena and her husband Leonard Scuderi travelled from Brisbane to spend time with the visitors. Peter and his family then motored down to Grenfell to spend time with his mother Heather and Colin Cooper. Peter a former Henry Lawson High School swimming champion and member of the Grenfell Swimming Club was very impressed with the Aquatic Centre and enjoyed a week of early morning swimming. A visit to Iandra Castle was a highlight of their trip.
