Two local residents have established a Boomerang Bags community group to make and distribute the bags across the shire with the aim of eliminating plastic bags from our stores.
Keryl McCann registered the Weddin Shire community with the Boomerang Bags organisation in 2017 and recently Helen Carpenter has further established the group which has produced the first supply of bags for the local township.
A number of Grenfell businesses, individuals, organisations, council and even the local high school have come on board to support the Boomerang Bags project.
Thank you to the ever growing group of local sewers who have offered their time to put bags together.

The Henry Lawson Festival committee have helped kick start the project by donating hundreds of environmentally friendly bags which art students at the Henry Lawson High School have screen printed with the Boomerang Bags logo.
“It is wonderful to see this project up and running,” said Allan Griffiths, president of the Henry Lawson Festival committee.
“The long term sustainability of our local waste depot has always been a concern of mine, this project will see tons and tons of plastic bag landfill eradicated.”
“During my term as a Councillor for Weddin Shire I put forward a motion in support of environmentally friendly bags, and while the motion was noted, nothing eventuated from it, to see this project well underway in our community is a great step moving forward.” said Mr Griffiths.
Coordinator Helen Carpenter is asking the community for donations of fabric and thread to produce more bags to distribute throughout the shire. One metre of fabric can produce two Boomerang Bags. Donations of fabric and thread can be dropped off at Grenfell Furniture and Whitegoods in Main Street. The first outlet for purchasing/ borrowing the bags will be Grenfell Meat Barn, also in Main Street.
There are two ways in which the bags work:
Borrow and Return: You use the bag and then return it to the outlet.
Bought and Support: You buy the bag for $5, this allows the group to purchase more fabric and thread to continue making the bags.
Weddin Shire Council have shown their support for the project by offering the use of their hub conference room to hold a sewing group which will make the Boomerang Bags. The first session will take place on Friday June 22 from 10am – 2pm.
Anyone wishing to become involved, including businesses who would like to become an outlet, are encouraged to contact Helen on 0428 542 708 or send her a message via the Facebook page at Boomerang Bags – Grenfell.
