The bluish-green meteor streaked the sky with a long tail.
It was sighted from Merimbula to Tamworth.
The dull, young moon made for an impressive show – the brighter the moon, the less chance a meteor will be visible from Earth.
Mt Stromlo Observatory in the ACT caught the meteor on camera, coming from the west and travelling to the north.
“It was a small meteor, about 20cm in diameter, made of very dense iron,” Stromlo observatory spokesman Brad Tucker said.
“We see them around once a month, but they’re more common around meteor showers.”
With a meteor shower planned for early May, amateur astronomers will be looking to the sky for a light show in upcoming weeks.
The meteor last night was clearly visible from Kiama, there have been a number of first-hand reports from amazed star gazers.
