Grenfell Librarian Erica Kearnes submitted an application for the Public Library Infrastructure Grant and was successful in receiving an amount of $44,727 to refurbish Grenfell Library.
The funding will provide a microfilm reader/printer as well as new furniture and shelving.
This will allow for a more flexible floor-plan with more room for library programs.
Currently the library is restricted to events that can take place due to the fixed shelving on the floor-plan, the new mobile shelving will change all of that as it is able to be maneuvered easily around the library to create much larger spaces as required.
“It is certainly exciting times for the Grenfell public library with a brand new look on the way which will enable us to host more events for the community as a whole.” said Ms Kearnes.
The Public Library Infrastructure Grants were made available for projects that will assist NSW councils to improve public library infrastructure, including buildings and information technology systems.
The funding has been provided in recognition of the increased and changing usage of New South Wales public libraries by local communities.
Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said that libraries formed an important part of the community, providing much more than simply a place to borrow books.
"Libraries are at the heart of our community and are transforming rapidly to meet the challenges of the digital age," she said.
"Not only are they places to borrow books, but they are also places to read newspapers and magazines, access the internet or study for school,
“I am thrilled that the New South Wales Government is continuing its strong support for libraries, especially in rural electorates such as Cootamundra."
Grants have been awarded to 33 local councils across New South Wales this year, including three in the Cootamundra electorate, providing significant public benefit and improving public library buildings, spaces and information technology for communities across the state.
